Dr. Martin's Bleedless White Ink vs Pen Ink?
« on: January 18, 2014, 08:49:45 PM »
Hi,

I am looking to buy white ink to write on kraft cardstock or kraft envelopes.
Most likely, will be using white more for kraft than black paper.

Could you suggest which ink would be best?
Also, would love nib suggestions for either ink.
I heard the nibs last much less when used on these inks so would like to know which nibs to buy extras of!

Thank you in advance!
Sus

Hi Sus,

I like Doc Martin's Bleedproof White the best. But like gouache, you do have to mix in some distilled water to get the consistency just right before lettering.

I also like McCaffrey's ivory white. It is a littler creamier or off-white than the Doc Martins and a little thinner but still makes a nice creamy white.

I hope others will chime in!

And yes, the whites do tend to chew up the nibs a little quicker. Also, I find once I use white on a nib, I can't go back to my other ink. It builds up so much on the nib, it's difficult to remove.
Warm Regards,

Hi Sus,
I like Dr. Martins Pen White, mixed with distilled water.  I find it easier for me to get the right consistency.
I tried Dr. Martins Bleed Proof white, and I was frustrated that it was hard for me to mix it to the right consistency.  But I haven't given up on it.  I've just grown used to Pen white for now.  I also love white gouache mixed with distilled water.
For nibs, I would start with the Nikko G nib.  Or the Zebra G is a good one too.  They're good dependable nibs.

Love,
Roseann

Thank you Roseann and Erica for your replies!

My concern was that since one was specifically "bleed proof" perhaps the pen white would "bleed".
Sounds like pen white also needs thinning so it will probably be ok?

Thank you for mentioning the distilled water.
I probably would've been frustrated regardless not knowing I had to thin them out!

I have 5 Nikko Gs in my cart from Erica'a Copperplate tutorial supply list!
Will just top it off to a dozen!

Thank you so much ladies!!!
Sus

Hi Sus,
Yes, Pen white is still too thick to write with.  It needs to be thinned first.  Its just not as thick as bleed proof.
Love,
Roseann

I have actually only one experience with white ink and it's with Dr PH Martin's Pen White. When I received it, it was really too "fluid" : when dipping the nib, all the white runs out slowly in small drops. Ink did not want to stay on the nib, like would do some SUMI ink.

I had to let the bottle opened one night so I can use it pretty much easier. I bought it in USA, opened it in France, does the weather/geography has something to do with the consistency? No idea.

Thanks Vince for mentioning that!

Did you have any problems with the white ink bleeding into the paper?

No problem Sus =) Yes, it was also bleeding on the paper because it was too "fluid" I guess. It's still very sensitive to pressure (especially the first strokes, when I just dip the nib into the ink) but it can be done. Before it was really impossible.

If somebody has a magic receipt to solve this, I'm interested.

Thanks Vince.
I ordered the pen white last night and I'm in the states.
I'll check to see what the consistency is like when I receive them!   :)
Fingers crossed!

I'm trying out some Pen White for the first time. I found it a little too thick to write with, so what I did was dip in pen white, then dip in some water, then write. Would taking out a portion of pen white onto a little dish and diluting it with distilled water work better? Thanks for any advice.

I have a marathon job on at the moment and have been working all day with Dr Martin's Bleedproof... it has already eaten one Brause 66EF and I'm sure I will need a new nib at some point tomorrow... but whilst I was doing this job, I thought to myself that Dr Martin's is just Tippex... and it crossed my mind to try Tippex... watered down... to see if it's any different... and then I wondered if anyone on the forum had tried this? I may have been suffering from inhaling too many Dr Martin's fumes when I started thinking about Tippex, so please excuse this meandering reply.

Now you've got my attention!  Isn't Tipp Ex otherwise known as correction fluid?  It might be a UK product, as I haven't heard of it in the US.  Let us know your results!  For opaque white lettering on dark papers, I prefer Pen White over Bleed Proof.  I will thin it down whenever necessary, just enough so it's not too runny.  Distilled H2O over tap H2O.  A cartoonist recommended White Rapidograph to me & that's pretty good, too.  If I'm going to lighten up a bottled acrylic color with white, I always use that brand of white, as I think it flows better.
Enjoy your day!
Marcia

Thanks Marcia. Scarlet Blue, that's exactly what my daughter said when I showed her my calligraphy with bleedproof. She says it looks just like correction fluid. Doesn't correction fluid come with thinner?

I use both and like both - however I think Pen White is much more, er, "aromatic" than Bleedproof white? I thin both down with distilled water as Marcia mentioned.
