Watercolor and ink - paper
« on: August 10, 2017, 11:18:49 AM »
Hi guys!!! Can someone tell me their recommendations on paper that takes watercolor AND can be used for pointed pen calligraphy. My watercolor paper is too toothy.. and I need something similar to cardstock because I want to frame it. Any help would be much appreciated  :)

If you go for a hot press watercolor paper, it will be smoother and easier to write on. You will still need to use a very light touch to ensure you don't snag though. Arches paper is always a dream to work on, but I also like Canson XL mix media when something thinner and less soft is needed.

I agree with Katie @Katie Leavens , hot press watercolor paper is a good choice!
Cheaper than Arches is watercolor paper from Fabriano (at least here in the Netherlands..)
I have the Fabriano Studio Watercolor Paper Hot Press in 140lbs ( 300g/m3) and find it very smooth for pointed pen  :D
Bristol Board is also very smooth. You could use that for light watercolor purposes. But if you need to use a lot of water for your piece, it's not the best choice.

Saunders Waterford HP is another contender.  I'm led to believe that their Botanical may not be the perfect solution it might appear, but the normal HP is good stuff all right.
