Tools & Supplies / Re: A few odd questions on ink...
« on: August 26, 2019, 07:53:22 PM »
Hey I live in Vegas too and definitely understand your concern.
I use bottled sumi ink mostly and always decant and dilute with about 30% water into a covered but not airtight inkwell. When I get back to writing the next day, I always add a few more drops of water using an eyedropper. Sometimes I don't get to write for over a week, and the sumi ink would harden into a black solid mass that i have to pick out with pliers! If you use an airtight inkwell then it'll help, though I'd still add water once in awhile. I have the same experience with iron gall and walnut ink. I use gouache from time to time, but I give up trying to save the leftover ink.

It's worse if you do gilding, the size dries so quickly it's very difficult to apply the gold leaf. Some tinkering with the formula is involved. And don't get me started on oil painting!

Good luck!!

Well.. Ni I say! Supreme flourishing power is derived from a mandate of the practice, not from some farcical judicial hall ceremony..

Omg! I will be visiting Tokyo too in January, but from Jan 9-13. I will just have missed you! I will piggyback on this thread, and also please share any fun spots to visit, as I have absolutely no idea what to do there.

I'm very sorry to hear that.. yikes!!! I hope you feel better.. and maybe look into replacing your chair or taking more frequent breaks.
I'm quite short sighted but dislike wearing glasses or contacts at home, so I am forced to slouch over the desk. This resulted in terrible pain in my shoulders and neck, and no amount of ergonomic chairs, lumbar stuff or special cushions can help. I had to go to a massage therapist every month ($$$!) but it didnt solve my problem.
A few months ago I decided to enroll in yoga class, and I must say it has been a huuuge improvement! My shoulders no longer hurt and I could cancel my massage appointments. I've since been going to class at least 2-3 times a week and highly recommend it to any calligrapher who needs some body readjustment!

Welcome back!!! I bet there's lots of photography opportunities for you!! Take a pic of your writing with the ink.. kind of curious how black it is!

I guess this discussion has been going on for a while.
Here's a little something from the Dec. 1886 issue of "The Penman's Art Journal." I bumped into recently.

(Incidentally, I collect these magazines, if anyone would like to sell or trade for them. I know, they are all scanned and available on the net, but I like turning the dusty pages as they did long ago)

Hold on a sec.. do you have that book Mike???

Tools & Supplies / Re: Question about fitting nibs to holders
« on: June 12, 2017, 05:19:58 PM »
Wrapping washi tape around a nib is a genius idea.. thanks Estefa!!!
AndyT has the right idea too.
As for which pliers.. why not both? Personally I only use a round nose pliers.. but if you can get the flat for cheap.. why not.. good luck!!

Get a pair of needle nose pliers, or one of Yoke's flange pliers and adjust the flange accordingly to fit all kinds of nibs. All you need to do is clip the underside of the flange so the nib stays nice and secure.

The smaller crow quill nibs will be tricky, but if you really like it you may need to get a separate holder for smaller nibs.. or keep fixing the flange..
