Write Cursive With Schin
« on: March 12, 2017, 01:40:00 PM »
Schin not being one to make a fuss about her many and various contributions to the calligraphy community, this time I thought I would.  Those who have not subscribed to her Youtube channel may be interested to hear that there is a new series on basic business writing - and jolly good it is too.  There are nine episodes so far, adding up to 3½ hours or so of inky goodness.  Here's the first part.

Once again, three cheers for Schin.  :)

Hot damn.  I love that woman.

I want to agree to this, but in a totally un-creepy way. Is that possible?

How about, I love that woman's work! and her posts, and her generosity, and, um... I'll just stop there.

I didn't really know what to call it, Schin, because I dislike the term "cursive".  ;)

Really, how come?? I called it cursive cos it implies a lot less stringent rules than 'business writing'...

Well, because it's a generalised descriptor and any form of writing which uses ligatures to increase speed is "cursive" by definition - including Greek, various South Asian scripts - and Chinese for that matter.  We know what we generally mean by it: a distinctively American form of handwriting deriving from 19th century business styles and with its deep roots in Spencerian, but really all it means is "joined-up writing".  This has been bugging me for a while!

Incidentally, ignoring all that, where do you think the division between business writing and American cursive lies?  It's not at all obvious to me.

I agree that Cursive without any further explanation is meaningless because as you say, it could apply to any form of joined-up writing. With my background Cursive applies primarily to Italic Cursive which came long before Spencerian.

As far as I can tell, Business Writing and American Cursive are the same with a few minor adjustments.
Business Writing is a particularly attractive form of lettering with an unfortunately, mundane boring name. My theory is that the script was renamed American Cursive to give it the same status as the aged-old Italic Cursive (which of course relates to Italy, from where much of our present script formations derive).

Awesome!  Thank you Schin!

Speaking of cursive, I'm reminded what the American singer/actor Dean Martin once said, "I don't slur my words, I'm just talking in cursive."
