This will be an amazing opportunity for those of you interested in the fine art application of marrying lettering and illustration. For centuries, this historical artform of the Illuminated Letter has entwined the emotion of art within the structure of the letterform. For the first time teaching in the United States, master illustrator Tiziana GIroni will be teaching the fundamentals of bringing to life a capital letter with beauty, grace and fine painting technique. She will guide you how to compose a unique illuminated design which will complete as a personal gouache-based illustration. Co-teaching the critical letterform aspect of this class, Master Penwoman Barbara Calzolari is an incredibly gifted teacher who lives and breathes for the art of the pen. To be graced with two master instructors for is truly a special opportunity, and one that will create a strong base for future studies. There will be two follow up classes after this one (dates TBD) to complete the Decorated Letter series.
CURRICULUM:
—Overview of the capital letters based on the golden section (Versal, Longobarde)
—Design of letterforms with small flower decorations, filigree, animals nestled within them
—Cannetta decoration
—Gouache painted illustration and/or ornamentation
—Application of faux gold leaf (if time permits)
FINAL PROJECT: And finally, you will create a final class project with a beautiful capital letter decorated with gouache and gold finish.

CLASS MATERIALS: Exemplars, practice paper, ink, nibs and additional basic needs will be provided as part of your tuition. There will be an additional CLASS KIT that may be purchased up to 2 weeks prior to class. You may also request a materials list to purchase the items on your own. We will send details.
