Show & Tell / Ruling pen - Expressive calligraphy
« on: November 14, 2014, 11:09:33 AM »
Hi everyone! Here is a recent project that started with meditative mark making using a ruling pen & india ink. It was selected as a semifinalist in a design contest with Uncommon Goods. There are 2 days left to vote, so if you like my art please take a minute to help me get to the finals!

Show & Tell / Layers and Layers of Letters!
« on: September 04, 2014, 07:53:34 PM »
I'd like to share this technique I developed (it was published in the Nov/Dec 2013 issue of Somerset Studio). I usually start by simply lettering the alphabet using an assortment of brush-tipped markers. I spill out words, quotes, feelings, lyrics, etc onto the paper. The lettering is expressive, not formal. I continue to build layers and layers of letters. Eventually I sketch a shape--in the attached sample I sketched a birdcage. This process is very meditative and I am usually quite surprised by the outcome. My avatar photo is a self-portrait that was created using this method. I hope it inspires you!

Introductions / greetings from Dandelion Ink Studio
« on: August 29, 2014, 02:38:33 PM »
I'm delighted to find this forum. My name is Linda Arandas and I am a mixed media artist. I love to paint, collage, illustrate and letter! I am a member of the Calligraphy Guild in Pittsburgh, PA . Through the guild I've had the opportunity to study under many national calligraphers. By now I should be a master but unfortunately it has been difficult for me. I am a lefty and to make it worse I write with my wrist hooked. I've never given up, though as I absolutely love to letter. I am especially fond of expressive lettering and love to create drawings with layers of letters.  I blog about my creative journey at: Dandelioninkstudio.blogspot.com
