Hi Ken,
The smilies, thumbs up, etc. are emojis which are done with a smart phone.

I think you are asking about the square in the center with the + sign in it? That is how you add photos or videos from your gallery.

Over the past couple of years, I've built up quite a sizeable Instagram collection of my work, but two small issues still bug me.  Perhaps some knowledgeable Instagrammer can help me with a couple of very basic questions.

Where and how can I access the little symbols which are occasionally added to replies - such as the small smiley, yellow faces and the thumbs up.

Also what is the meaning of the narrow, upright rectangle with a cross inside?

The symbol I'm describing, appears alongside the smilies etc, as part of a reply. It's a really narrow, tiny rectangular box standing upright on its short end. Internally, two lines join at the corners forming a cross.

I think the symbol you are talking about is when certain devices don't recognize certain emojis - it's a placeholder. My phone does that once in awhile when someone with an Apple phone comments on a post of mine and it's an emoji that Android devices do not support.

Ken is the x box made with very thin lines so that it looks more like a typed character than a picture/emoji?  If so that means the other person used an emoji that you're computer/phone doesn't recognize and doesn't have an image for, so it puts that box there instead.
