So cute! I love it, Natascha. You can sell those as postcards at your fair booth!

Open Flourish | General Discussion / Re: Constructing Family Trees
« on: June 15, 2015, 03:04:07 PM »
I've been researching how to do a family tree as a gift for my mom and aunts since earlier this year, so I'm excited to see this! For sake of readability and clarity I'm thinking of stopping at great-great-grandparents. There are some really cool layouts I've found and saved in a folder-- I can upload a few later tonight if anyone is interested!

I have yet to see a cumputerised family tree layout which can easily handle complexities such as these. This intermediate draft, is a small section of a larger tree, which comprises 267 individuals and goes back 13 generations. This is by no means, the largest tree I have done.

No two trees are the same, and in my view, the most attractive display is achieved with a flexible, individual approach such as the one I'm advocating.  :)

I didn't mean a computerized layout-- I meant graphic layouts. Your layout is wonderful, and I'd love to take that organizational strategy and make it more decorative versus just rectangles and lines.

Oooo that is cool! My mom recently bought a fancy Cricut machine, and I'm curious if she could do something like this with vinyl...

Things like this make me want to delete all of my social media accounts! I go back and forth every few years and end up removing accounts, only to want them back later and realize that my username was taken or something. It's a silly world we live in!

My tumblr is full of Doctor Who, cat GIFs, and stick-it-to-the-man stuff, haha. I used to post original content but then decided I liked making a curated page of stuff I love way more. I'll follow you guys though! I only follow a few calligraphers (Linda Y. included!) so it'll be fun to add more stuff to my dashboard :)

These are beautiful! Natascha, I really love that just the speech bubble pokes out of your shirt normally-- so many layers of meaning :D Elaina, the b/w shaded linework and of course the flowers are just stunning! And I especially love the "death flower" story!

I don't have any tattoos, but I'd eventually like to get one dedicated to my sweet cockatiel. She's been my little love for 16 years so far and hopefully many more! I haven't decided what the tattoo will be yet, which is why I haven't gotten it. Maybe it'll be some of her feathers, or maybe a watercolor-esque portrait with all her bright colors. I'm thinking I'd get it on my shoulder where she always sits! She always be with me, even when she's gone!

Thank you, guys! I hope there aren't any wasp larvae in mine...they've been sitting on my dresser for a week! Noodles loves to eat bugs so maybe she caught any stray ones ;)

I'll update everyone once I make a batch!

Is there like a calendar with the release dates?

The Creative Bug blog has a listing of all the release dates each month :)

Tools & Supplies / Homemade iron gall ink, anyone?
« on: April 30, 2015, 12:22:41 AM »
I posted this on IG but thought I'd put it out here, too!

I was on a job site yesterday and noticed little baubles all over a cluster of beautiful oak trees (that hopefully will survive construction)! I knew right away they were galls, and much to my boss' surprised, I started scooping them up. I got a few handfuls, and I'd love to attempt making iron gall ink...except I don't know how.

The internet has provided a few tips, but I thought you clever folks might have better recipes or suggestions. Has anyone made their own iron gall ink before?

That's amazing! I just recently watched the episode of Mad Men were everyone watches the moon landing (which I've heard my dad talk about a lot)...and here we are writing messages you can see from space! The world is wonderful :D

I have always loved handwriting, and since I first learned to write I've always experimented with different styles and sizes! I wrote my first handwritten paper in elementary school in the tiniest writing I could cramped into the corners of the paper...my teacher didn't enjoy that, but I thought it was hilarious. I also remember in 7th grade my teacher said we would be reading papers for one assignment out loud, so we could "write it all in pink crayon if you want!" And that's exactly what I did! Is it good that I make myself laugh most of the time?

I took calligraphy classes because I thought it'd be a fun craft, and then I found a really wonderful community of people on IG and here on the Forum that's kept me motivated and inspired to learn more! On slow work days I daydream about being at home all day being paid to paint, knit, and do calligraphy, but I know that's not a goal I'm actively working toward. My favorite presents to give are handmade things, and calligraphy is another way to make something special. I think my sisters were getting tired of framed photos, paintings, and alpaca/cashmere blend hats anyways ;)

In the future it'd be fun to make some legitimate side money from my hobbies, maybe by having a stand at farmer's markets or doing a few commissioned works for friends of friends :)
