Blingtastic modern versals
« on: March 01, 2016, 11:28:26 PM »
Morning everyone!

I have been having a total ball with these little watercolour jewels this week, as you've probably seen on Instagram if you follow me :D I thought I would show them here too.

So, my calligraphy society had a workshop on "whimsical pointed pen," and one of the very last things we looked at were from Joanne Fink's book http://www.amazon.com/Zenspirations-Letters-Patterning-Joanne-Fink/dp/1574216996 (i hope it was this book! i've ordered it, anyway, so i'll find out soon :))

Totally fell in love. They're so bright and happy!  So in my off-hours all week, instead of sleeping, I've been drawing little simple versals and filling them in with dangles and doodles and scribbles and splashes. They've slowly evolved from basically copying out of the book into something a bit sturdier, but I bet once the book arrives I'll go straight back to them.

Anyway, here we go. The versal forms aren't very good because I was mostly drawing from memory. Don't do it, kids, always have an exemplar. Yikes.

The above two were done in the last few minutes of the class, without a proper pen, which is why the ink is all smeary. These were my first attempts.

Two more attempts at a K. You can see I'm starting to lose the 'zentangle' energy and the letters are getting a bit more solid and defined. I guess I'm naturally inclined to heaviness ... or at least, that's what I tell my bathroom scales ;)

I liked the way the colours came out in this M!

Most recent attempts and the ones I'm happiest with. Although seeing them at this size means the flaws are so obviousy ... all of these versals are actually less than 5cm square (about 2 inches).

These were a heap of fun, and the lovely Phyllis Macaluso has convinced me I should do a quick Periscope on them, so I guess you can keep an eye on my scope account if you're interested!  Probably tomorrow morning before work - somewhere around 5 or 6am Melbourne time.  (Mornings, I know, I know.)

They are really funny and happy – and I actually like the first very much where you don't always follow the outlines exactly – makes them even more lively!

anyone who likes contemporary versals should go to pinterest and do a search for versals. you will see many variations. often times when you click on a pin, it will lead you to many more.

i saw my first contemporary versals 25 years ago. they were done by Jean Formo. if you do a google image search, you will see a few samples from her.  another name to search on both google images and pinterest is Sherri Kiesel - she is the QUEEN of versals and there are many people who have taken her workshops and then branched out with their own.

as with every style of lettering, it is helpful to trace back to the masters and get the full spectrum of possibilities.

i have many contemporary versals on my blog. sadly, i did not label all of them, so only 3 pop up.

i did a search for on my blog and found more
will post them as time permits

this one was gel pen with colored pencil.
i prefer making the lines faster - so often start with gel pens or g-tecs
this is the fastest versal i do
others are slower with more detail

and this is not lombardic
i think moya's are based on lombardic versals
that's the fun with versals - so many variations in the historical examples

Love these Moya!!! So beautiful. I love how you added the watercolors and bling to them. Gorgeous! Joanne is a good friend of mine and I was lucky enough to have taken one of her first Zenspiration classes. It was fabulous. Her website is full of amazing things and freebies.

I also took Sherri Kiesel's class on "Kersals." Fabulous and like Jean said you can find examples online.

I really like how you have added your own spin on these! Just beautiful. Watching you on Scope right now!  ;D "The erase too soon club." Ha ha - I'm a member, too!
Warm Regards,

These are so wonderful!
And I like the vitality of the letters being drawn without an exemplar.

my all time favorite contemporary versals, done by the ineffable nancy hills
technically, versals should not be used to write words, but in this case, i think it works.

oh my gosh Jean, thank you so much for sharing these, they are stunning.  I love them so much.

and everyone else, thank you so much for your kind words!  Oh man, the erase too soon club, I will never not be a member of that.

Early morning scopes may not be my thing. I think I kept forgetting what to say. ;) But it's always fun "seeing" people in real time - thank you for watching!!
