19th Century Hottie Identification Contest Giveaway

Lets have some fun.
Identify this 19th century hottie of a penman and win a prize.

Rules:
One guess per person per day (respond to this post, not by pm)
First person to correctly identify him in a post here wins the prize ( a mousepad with one of his works on it).
Contest ends when either someone correctly identifies the penman or no entries are received for three days.
That's it.

I may publish a hint or three as time goes by, as I do want someone to win.
Hint #1:  The photo posted here is a crop of the page on which the original is printed (the original page is about 11 1/2  X 15 inches). I had to crop it because his name appears right below him. Hey, maybe you have this publication. And maybe not.

Alrighty then. A swing and a miss. As per the rules, the contest is ended after three days with no entries. In fact, 66 views and no entries at all. I guess my odd ideas as to what is fun are not shared. I'll try to come up with something better in the future.

To be honest, last night I spent quite a bit of time googling every penman I could think of and none of them looked like this hottie, so I couldn't chip in a guess.

I am very curious who it is though..

i tried all the reverse image searching engines and came up with lots of stuffs but none have that hair.

His name does appear in Michael Sull's Spencerian Script and Ornamental Penmanship. No image, though.

i did look at zanarian.com and michael sull vol. i .. i thought it would be one of the penman without a portrait...

now..which publications should we look for?

IIRC that's Oliver Goldsmith who was based out of New York and active in the 1840s and 50s teaching "mercantile penmanship". Notable because his book published in 1844 apparently claimed to contain only reproductions of work executed with metal pens, apparently one of the first uses of the word "copperplate" to describe a specific style of writing (as opposed to any style writing which was so perfectly executed it looked like it was engraved) and one of the first American penmanship books to be reproduced by lithography instead of engraving.

To my knowledge, heretofore, his image has not been available on google. It will be soon, however, after this thread is picked up.
This brings up an interesting point on research, however, which I'll introduce later in this thread.
I'm happy you found it interesting enough to look into the matter.

Ah, I did say that it his name appeared in Sull's SSOP, but it is not in volume one, where you might expect it to be . It's on page 445 of volume 2.
