Have you ever had the experience of following someone you would never have followed? It's happened to me a couple of times.
YESSSS @SueL ! That just happened to me! I saw the post and I thought to myself, why am I seeing this person's post. Then I checked their feed and no calligraphy at all... nope - never followed.
I feel like this all the time when I look at Stories

How do you want your handwriting to look? Find an exemplar with that look.
Have you tried asking Dr. Vitolo? I think he writes with fountain pens.
As for the books/methods, just pick one. If you don't like it, move on to the next.
Everything is compatible with fountain pen. You just need the right fountain pen

So you would take the gel pad off if you want to add flourishing? I guess my point is if the tool for technique practice limits an aspect of writing (flourishing in this case) maybe there's a better way. Then again maybe you don't care for flourishing. In that case disregard this
I don't care that much for the instructions in the manuals myself but if they help you get the results you want more power to you. I'm sure they knew what they were talking about!

Oh, I don't doubt it's more comfortable for you.
I wish it were the case for me too 'coz I practice for hours at a time and it gets uncomfortable sitting but for the style of calligraphy I do working in prone position would compromise both the technique and comfort.
I wonder who else here writes on the floor tho..

im gonna pass. For ornamental penmanship the arm cannot be planted while writing so i'd have to support my upper body with one arm the entire time and i have enough back pain as it is

That's awesome how you have a vivid memory of it. Really made an impact on you.
My fifth grade teacher had the best chalkboard cursive. I always wondered how he kept everything even and straight with no guidelines. It was like magic.
I remember being made to do oval drills in school at age 5. This was in the 80s. Everyone wrote Palmer cursive by the second grade.
My second grade teacher was one of those who walked around with a stick during handwriting class.
Wow, this probably explains why I hate doing drills haha! I never set out to make mine pretty. I've never been complimented on my handwriting while in school coz it really wasn't special. I stopped writing cursive at around 16 and my everyday handwriting looks worse and worse as the years go by
Man, watching him write was the best part of that class. I wish i had a picture of my 5th grade teacher's blackboard writing but this was before digital cameras.

I don't know if I've seen instruction on this matter. How do you write these in your regular handwriting? Maybe you could use that to inform your choices in Ornamental Penmanship.

This grip is for offhand flourishing. It can be done with an oblique & regular grip too but you'd have to draw the letters in reverse for the shades to land in the right places.
