Kind Critique / Help with copperplate minuscule 's'

Hi guys, I'm using Eleanor Winters' book and trying to figure out how to write the minuscule s right but I can't seem to get it right... It feels so unnatural! I attached a few pictures with my practice and numbered them so it's easy to refer to them. What am I doing wrong? I feel like my slant is off and my shade too thick beginning at the waist line, and I struggle with rounding the bottoms... and...and..and...and..

I guess just general inconsistency. Also - is it okay that the oval at the end of the 's' crosses the lead-in stroke?

Would appreciate any help on getting it right, thanks in advance!!

Open Flourish | General Discussion / Fraktur exhibition in Philadelphia

Hey guys, so I'm currently in Philly on a weekend trip till monday and decided to visit the Parkway Central Library where they're having an exhibition on fraktur. (from Wiki: Fraktur is a calligraphic hand of the Latin alphabet and many of several blackletter typefaces derived from this hand. The word derives from the past participle fractus ("broken") of Latin frangere ("to break"); the same root as the English word "fracture".)

It was so interesting!!!!! They had birth certificates, and many different manuscripts and they were all sooooooo beautiful I was swooning at every single piece. I would recommend it if you're going to be in Philly, it'll only take about an hour or so! It's on till June 14

Pictures are not in the best quality because of the size limit... but hopefully they're still good enough to appreciate!

Introductions / Hello from a Singaporean in NYC!

Hi guys!

I'm Fay, I'm 22 and interning in NYC until the end of June so I've been spending my nights practising calligraphy - I guess you could say I have no social life, but I'd say practising calligraphy beats a night's out...  I only just started this year, and I've gone through Joseph M. Vitolo's free pdf on copperplate calligraphy but now I'm watching Ellen's pointed pen nirvana videos and they're great. It's awesome to be able to get calligraphy supplies so easily here in the U.S too.

This place seems really friendly and it's practically bursting with tips and so much great help, I really hope to improve with more practise - I want to be able to do wedding invitations for my friends!
