This is an excellent question and one many calligraphers have. It is easiest to think of each letter as a series of strokes. The connector strokes on letters,b, o, v, and w are unique in that they are at the midline, instead of the baseline. But they should connect just like the connectors do at the baseline.
The connector stroke itself should be thought of as a mini lowercase i. The shade (stem) of the i should be to the left of the hairline stroke, not on top or to the right. Then the connection will carry over just as a baseline connector does to just above the midline of the next letter. There are a few exceptions to this such as when the o connects to a v or r.
