Day 16 - 2023: Angel
« on: October 16, 2023, 05:35:54 PM »
From a trip to Italy in 2004.
I've always been amazed at the softness one can depict using stone as a medium.

@AnasaziWrites is back! As always, beautiful work, Mike (both the photo and the Spencerian).

@Matthew H. - I guarantee there is a flaw that pains me on each and every day of Inktober! But that just shows that I'm trying!

The portrait in "Angel" here is a bit of a mess - it's really hard to draw this small! My family had a sports rift in it - some for Dodgers; others for Angels. But here's something for everyone: The second coming of Babe Ruth lands in Anaheim, but Shohei Ohtani may go to LA when free agency kicks in next season. Could it be better?

Great detail in that small portrait. Well-rendered logo letters. (We teach many students from Japan and they LOVE Ohtani.)

Digression warning ;D

Can you see Shohei go anywhere next season. He's out for the whole of '24 pitching wise (according to the reports I read several weeks ago), and whilst he could/would be worth more than many just as a DH, his value is in his pitching. (if a brave man were to have to make a call) ,..... and besides, I would love to see him go East Coast, especially to The Bronx, to my beloved Yankees, but that wont happen. He's destined for moving across town, so to speak, but I'm a Brit, I know nowt about nowt, but I love my baseball.

Digression over.  ;D

I've been back and forth (mostly back ;D) about whether to post this. But then not posting it because it isn't perfect defeats the purpose, right?!

I have to admit, the process of working on this today has helped me in so many ways. Rather than write angel in black practice ink, it seemed the perfect time to try to get to grips with Schmincke gold gouache. I confess, I usually prefer a slightly deeper shade of gold (and gouache remains something of a headache, I'm afraid). But I really enjoyed working with it. I also had to write flat, which I don't usually do, and it taught me I definitely need to practise more of that. Anyway, I'm just making excuses now. Here goes…

(And like you said, @K-2, hopefully the fact I've failed so much while doing this means I've been pushing myself!)

If your work were to be a 10th of what you have posted, it would be criminal not to post it here. Awesome work!

I loved reading this @Matthew H. , your italics are lovely. The capital A is very balanced and the g is very elegant.
I ordered Schmincke calligraphy gouache (black and deep red) because I need them for the Fraktur course I'm taking (the black gouache at least), but now I'm worried it may be harder to use than I anticipated... is it really difficult? (i was hoping gouache would be great with bigger nibs).
Oh crępe!

@Mark T @Gary @Lucie Y and everyone – I just wanted to say how touched I am by your kindness. Thank you so much for the things you've said. I'd been really unhappy with what I'd done and came very close to putting it in the bin and pretending it hadn't happened, so I can't tell you how grateful I am.

@Lucie Y I've just seen your incredibly beautiful Fraktur in the other thread – I hope you're enjoying the course. Unfortunately, I think my problems with the Schmincke Calligraphy Gouache were caused solely by me! I tried Winsor & Newton a little later and mostly experienced the same problems. I was struggling to get a consistency that would flow from the nib but was also opaque enough to cover my pencil guidelines.

I'm still not sure I've sorted the problem completely, but I think it was mostly caused by a combination of Mitchell reservoirs (which, four years later, I think I'm only just getting the hang of!), writing at a slanted board (so most of the gouache was pooling at the bottom of strokes) and, well, my general incompetence! After using the gold gouache the other day, I'd like to try reintroducing the reservoir and maybe a slight angle to the board.

The only difficulty I found more with the Schmincke than the Winsor & Newton was the gum arabic separating out. With the W&N's, I mostly found I could just squeeze that top bit out and everything beneath was OK. With the Schmincke, it made a big difference when I stirred the inside of the most-separated tubes with a cocktail stick. (Maybe they were just slightly older?)

But I'm sure you'll love the Schmincke – it mixes to the most beautiful, creamy consistency. I must try out the deep red again – the light red (possibly Vermilion Red?) is my favourite of all their colours. It just pops off the page!
