Day 1 - 2023: Dream
« on: October 01, 2023, 06:00:13 PM »
It is on, Inktoberists!

This year I'm taking a cue from @Lucie Y and working on my decorated capitals. I'm warming up for a project I hope to start early next year, applying a modern aesthetic to medieval-style illustrated capitals. So I'm experimenting! I don't expect them all to be successful, but you never know until you try. My other goal is to do at least one capital of every letter of the English alphabet, so I'll use synonyms or terms related to the prompt list so that I can hit the range of A to Z from time to time.

I drew the figure in "Dream" based on the bust of the god Morpheus in the British Museum. Parker Quink Black & Dr. Ph. Martin's Nickel for the capital D.

Message copied and pasted from the thread that I created at the same time as K2 created this one *facepalm*

Hi everyone! A quick post before I go to bed, it's already midnight in France!

So, I took K2's advice and started early. I uses the prompts as practice opportunity, and used the word of the day to learn about Roman capitals, their geometry, spacing etc. I drew the circle in a square guideline and traced the letters over it on tracing paper, then tried to write them down on square paper without guidelines, like Sheila Waters suggests in her book.

Below are my humble beginnings. Hoping to improve by the end of the month!

Also, none of this was done today, K2 said their was no Inktober police so I feel pretty safe posting this 😂

Can't wait to wake up to your interpretations of the prompt!

Good night :)
Oh crÍpe!

Wow @K2, this is beautiful. The statue drawing really conveys emotions. And the calligraphy is gorgeous. I can't wait to see the rest of the alphabet!
Oh crÍpe!

I recently started a class and by coincidence, the first "prompt," was "dream," wherein we were supposed to look around our workspace and post a photo of something that inspired us to dream.
Here's mine--my favorite nibs and favorite book.

Everyone, great work already.

Iíve started. I have decided to do a weekís worth at my own pace. Also, I am working small - I used a fineliner to rule off some boxes on a 2-page spread in an 8x10 art journal, one box for each word. Itíll work best for me and be more enjoyable and attainable, and less pressure.
That plan, however, creates an issue with posting. I would like to post at the end of each week (for example Iíd post days 1-7 on the Day 7 thread). My weekly post would be just one spread. Hope thatís OK. If not, Iíll take individual photos and post to each day.

I also took K-2ís advice about starting early. . . I have a few days penciled in already.
Iíll enjoy checking in to see everyoneís work during the week.
