Fun with Watercolor!
« on: February 20, 2014, 02:16:36 PM »

I recently discovered that brush-lettering is fun! ;D

I used to be really intimidated by the brush. I used watercolor in school and hated it because it was just so difficult to control. Instead, I painted with mostly acrylic. But in a recent Blackletter class, my teacher showed us how to write Gothic letterforms with a flat brush and I totally fell in love with it. Why didn't I ever try writing with brushes before?

(Some flat brush Gothic writing can be seen in my post here)

I had been writing with brush markers and had fun with them, so last week I decided to be brave and try writing and painting with a real pointed brush. I was surprised at the outcome. I had never really done any watercolor painting before, and it felt so much easier this time around. Writing with brushes made something click inside my head.

I know my letterforms need work. I'm just so excited I'm not afraid of brushes anymore.

Thanks for looking, :D

-Linda

Beautiful, Linda! I love how you incorporated the watercolor painting. You are inspiring me -- based on your Black Letter brush work, I went and ordered a Windsor & Newton chisel brush. I love how you used it as wrapping paper!

I said it before and I'll say it again, these are absolutely lovely :) I used to casually paint water colors. I've never tried lettering with them but this makes me want to!

Brad, Lori, & Brianna, thanks so much for the encouragement!

Lori, at the workshop I went to this weekend, we used Japanese rice paper (the type used for those wooden screens) and watercolor, writing on the smooth side. It worked beautifully! I think it would make beautiful custom-calligraphy wrapping paper. You're going to have so much fun with it.

Brianna, definitely give it a try & please share pics when you do!

These are really beautiful I also find that brush lettering is very, very difficult so wow, compliment! You also have a great sense for colour :).

oh wow!! I bought some brushes TODAY cos I want to try the same!
I think it is also interesting to scan the water color text and play with different opacities and hues in Photoshop :)

Will post something soon!

OK, I'm on the hunt for rice paper now! It looks like I can get it online, but I'll have my daughter check when she goes to the Japanese Festival this weekend.

Thank you Stefanie - I still find it very difficult but feeling a little less intimidated by it now! And I do enjoy using bright colors...

Donna, thank you! I've been very much inspired by a lot of the lettering artists I follow on Pinterest and Tumblr. There are so many great inspirations there.

Somehow I missed this! Sooo, soo beautiful!

If you ever get a chance to take a class with Marilyn Reeves, do it. Her brush class was one of the best calligraphy workshops I have taken yet.
Warm Regards,

This looks amazing! Been trying watercolor/gouache brush calligraphy recently but it has been difficult especially in the curves or loops. Anyway, hope to see more of your work soon! :)
