Some inspiration...
« on: February 11, 2014, 03:09:09 PM »
The other day Joe Vitolo posted this wonderful exemplar of Lupfer's work on the FB calligraphy group, and it's so wonderful, I felt like sharing it here.
It's a very nice blend of ornamental-style caps with a flourished roundhand lettering... One can only wish to achieve anything close to this!

Thanks Martin,

As a beginner it was really useful to see how the lowercase letters are supposed to join together and looking at this, I realise that I am missing some important steps in my own practice!

Wonderful!

Perhaps with 10 years of long, daily practice... :)

Perhaps.. but I suspect it'll take more than that. At least, at the rate at which someone who's not a full-time penman can dedicate to the craft...

I was just took the capitals practice from Erica.  I have to agree... not only is the D very hard but honestly it isn't very pretty.  Not even on your example.  I don't think it was the penman I think (IMO) it's just not a very pretty letter.  Which is sad that I have to write it daily for my name.

Noo, Daisy, there are pretty Ds out there, look at this one: https://www.flickr.com/photos/21860485@N06/12601446643/in/set-72157641139333033
While some really aren't that pretty, I find it to be a lovely specimen.

Yuck!  Nope.  Sorry to disagree.  I just don't like the letter, I guess.

I'm not sure I understand what you meant, but is it so that you don't like the Spencerian/OP type 'D'? It is indeed quite unlike a 'D' in most other scripts...
I was not very fond of it either, but appreciation has come as time passes. It's not particularly hard to pen, either... just takes a bit of practice.
