the world of mechanical pencils ...
this is pure stationery fetishism

You say that like it's a bad thing.  ::)

The lead holders sound familiar, my grandfather was a civil engineer and my father a sometime journeyman carpenter, so I saw some around and about while growing up.  In shop class in junior high, we had a drafting unit and learned how to use a T-square, triangle, etc, although I think we used regular pencils.  At the time, most of us would rather be out working on projects using the patterns the teacher already had, but as an adult, I have found that tiny bit of drafting experience very useful from time to time!  Actually, most of what I learned in "vocational" classes has been extremely useful.  Typing, for instance....

Wow, Elizabeth.  I don't recall girls even being encouraged to take any shop classes.  If I'd known that drafting was a part of what I'd have learned in shop, I might have taken that instead of home-ec because basically, I already knew how to cook and sew.  No doubt that knowledge really does come in handy.

Estrella, these are for the Staub/Young wedding that takes place this coming Saturday.  I forget where the ceremony and reception will be but let's just say they're 'on the map.'

Angelinamkelly, I only had a week for getting them finished, including time to figure out what and how to do them, because my husband and I were going out of town and there was a calendar overlap.  As you can imagine, things moved along much quicker towards the end than they did at the beginning.   ;D

***There are three other tips I forgot to mention:

--Since we're accustomed to working on a surface with an edge drop-off (the canvases sat up, close to 1/2" off the surface of my desk), I not only placed a little cardboard box behind the canvas but I put a new Rhoda pad along side to have an almost continuous level to work on.

--I did a line so they'd be aligned from the same place on the canvas, and pre-lettering with a Fons & Porter white lead pencil, available from http://www.paperinkarts.com/redpak.html  As you can see, it comes with an eraser and I did use the eraser on the canvas for much of the clean up.  The Copic White withstood it just fine.

--I also used a #2 Princeton Chisel Blender and water, making sure to clean the brush each time I dipped it into water and semi-drying/blotting it, to smooth out any lines that were just a little too textured because of the canvas.

Thanks folks.  The guests won't see them till next Saturday night.  I had to get this done because my husband and I are going out of town on Sunday and won't get back until the day before the client leaves ATL for New York.  I really do hope they like them, though.  The client thinks the guests will be surprised.

Andy, YES!  I definitely enjoyed doing these.  They took a lot of patience and focus and required much more attention to detail than I EVER thought I'd be interested in doing.  It surprised me, actually.

Hello everyone.  Again, thanks for so many good suggestions and ideas!  So, what I went with was workable fixative on the canvases, a pen (straight holder) with a Brause 66ef nib and Copic Opaque White for the ink.  It's very much like Bleedproof but I think it's a little more opaque.  I've been studying and practicing quite traditional hands so when the client asked for something fun, modern, sleek and unfussy I tried my hand at something modern, which I've never done before.  At the time I made the request for your help, I had no idea these babies were going to the Lincoln Center in NYC--and that's just for the rehearsal dinner!  Someone in Texas did the actual invitations and I can't help but wonder if I know who it is.   ;D   No name was given.

The BEST suggestion was from Stefanie...I found a tiny box that was just the right size to saw off and fit into the back side to provide some resistance for the nib.  Thanks so much, Estefa!  That made all the difference and I cannot imagine how many I'd have done before figuring out I needed something behind the canvas.

Hi All.

I've been asked to do 60 names on black, 3" x 3" mini-canvases (of course it's in a hurry  :o) and I'm wondering if anyone has experience working on tiny canvas and what tools and materials you might have used. She doesn't care much about what style the writing is but asked if I could do something similar to the invitation which is an all lower case with short ascenders, font.  If you used a paint brush, what brand?

Thanks so much!

Debbie

I've found a new one guys!  Copic Opaque White.  It's very similar to Bleedproof in that it's a thick and creamy and requires dilution with water and to my eye, was even more opaque than Bleedproof White.
