Show & Tell / Re: Son's Baptismal invite

Thanks everyone! Makes me feel more confident in practicing more pointed pen calligraphy.   :D

Wow! Love the little cloud flourishes! <3

I wish I was already into calligraphy when my daughter was baptized. I had a really hard time picking out a nice font for the invitation I made. It would have been nice to incorporate my own calligraphy just like what you did. :) Oh, and I think your list of Ninongs and Ninangs are just about the normal size. ;) Haha!

Hi Anna! Exactly why I like incorporating my handmade letters to digital work. Besides the fact that it's hard to find the most fitting font, it feels more fulfilling that you really make it your own.

..We just can't get enough of Ninongs and Ninangs! I actually have a long list of Godsons and daughters. When Christmas comes... long shopping list for gifts! haha!  ;D

Oh that's just lovely, Martin! I never tried Spencerian before. I think I should try it sometime.  :)

Ahahaha! He must've had a bad handwriting. Most people from their time seem to have neat and legible handwriting.

Schin! I'm in awe of your work!
Irony made the excerpt funny... and pretty... pretty daunting.  ;D

I just saw this and I'm so jealous! Haha! I should join you one of these days. It would be easier to meet up with you ladies if only I live near the metro. I used to travel to Manila and stayed there for college, but now three hours of travel is hard when you have a new born.
For now, I would love to join your chat group to get to know you all and share stuff. I have instagram but not really active so there's nothing much to see. But I'll follow you there, im louiseyuweesh. Add me up at facebook Louise Cervantes Ilagan.  :D

Excited to chat with you ladies!

Wow! Thanks ladies for your kind comments. I feel so overwhelmed!  :)

Erica, such compliments coming from you? I must be in the right track!

Nicole, I'm glad you liked the flourishes. I'm pleased with how they turned out as well. My creative juices are coming back to me, I guess.

Joi, good to know you think it's professional looking, because my goal by mid this year is to make a portfolio of my work, so I may take on comissions on the side and maybe full time someday.
I'm quite surprised myself having everything done by myself w/in 4 days (40 invites). Purely breastfeeding a newborn, keeping up with my very active 2yr old boy, and managing the family business (at least I have my husband for that). Good thing we have someone to cook our meals or doing this would've been impossible.

Show & Tell / Son's Baptismal invite
« on: March 05, 2014, 05:21:45 AM »
I made this invitation for my son's baptism. I wrote his name and the word godparents with a pointed pen, scanned and cleaned it with photoshop. I ought to vectorize it but I didn't have the time and figured it's not necessary. I enjoyed figuring out the "cloudy" flourishes to go with the invitation's overall look. (I did tons of attempts on this)

I also did the names on the envelopes. Not very pretty, as I was rushing everything and I deffinitely need more practice. hehe. I usually don't write the addresses because we send invites personally. Although if i had the time, I would have done it for the sake of practice.  ;D

The Godparents might seem funny to you guys, coz here in the Philippines most of us want a LOT of
godparents... funny "culture", it seems. (For sake of receiving loads of gifts for Christmas!) I for one would ask 4 to 6 at most but my husband already asked almost a whole group of friends! Haha! But very close friends all of 'em... and a few relatives.

Hey there Katia! Ayos naman ako! Great to know there are a lot of us here. Sa Manila ka ba based?

Thanks everyone!
I'm currently refreshing on my calligraphy and I've been practicing with a pointed nib (an hour a day) for almost a week now. Hopefully I'd be able to post something decent soon.. haha!  :P

Oh my oh my!
I watched the video while feeding my baby. When he started to write... I gasped! And somehow didn't take my eyes off the screen. I didn't realize I've been spilling milk all over my baby's neck. I had to wash and change him, then fed him first, and watched the video over again.

The flourishes! So amazing!
Someday i wont need guidelines too!
Just amazing!

Wow! Such helpful advice and encouragement.

I'm quite patient when I want things done as perfect as I'd like them to turn out. But there are just days when frustration gets in the way, and feels like any kind of help won't do.

It's true, we, ourselves, are our worst critic. In my case I am brutal (or used to be), and my hubby is my horrible critic! Yeah, he's amazed with whatever or however i write or draw things. No negative criticisms from him, that's for sure. But he's my source of encouragement. One time I felt exhausted with how I was doing with my writing, he asked me if he could try it himself. So he did and then said : "Now compare your work with this, hope it makes you feel better." Of course it did, made me laugh really! That's him telling me, it's not magic and you just can't compare your work with others' well polished and published work. You don't have an idea how much time they spent on it and how much practice to have such muscle memory to achieve that. It's a spot on that quote, Wendy! I should always be reminded of that.  :)

Hi Erica and Vince,

Thanks for the warm welcome! And thanks for reading such a lengthy intro/story. Haha!
Indeed, handcrafted gifts are such things to behold. It would be great to see those letters again! One of the girls who got the letters actually told me that she kept the letters because they were pretty (not exactly for the guy, oops!). Apparently she knew I was making them. I'm not sure if she still has them though.

I've been reading all the posts here, and there's so much to learn, so much to see! But feels like I have so little time. I promise to make time for practice, to learn more and share! <-- this should be on the resolutions thread.  ;)

I'll be posting my work soon. Yay! So excited!
