Favorite Resources / Supplies in Italy
« on: July 09, 2017, 09:43:11 AM »
Hi! I wonder if my friends from Italy can help me out. Where would I be able to find calligraphy and art supplies in Venice and Florence? I'm thinking of vintage nibs, handmade papers, inks etc. Or are there any must-visit art supplies stores and museums? Thanks.

General How To's & Projects / How do you get ink to dry faster?
« on: November 27, 2014, 02:46:25 AM »
I'm wondering if there's a quiet contraption I can use to dry my inks quicker. I've considered heat guns, but they make some noise. Any other suggestions? Thanks!

Tools & Supplies / Where to get calligraphy supplies in London?
« on: September 30, 2014, 07:44:07 PM »
Hi. I was wondering if any of our English members or members who are familiar with London will be able to advise me on some of the places to go in London to get calligraphy supplies. Would the markets also be good places to scout for vintage calligraphy supplies? If so, which markets? I'm thinking of Portobello and Covent Garden? Any advice would be most welcome. Thank you.

Tools & Supplies / Scented ink?
« on: September 19, 2014, 11:52:31 PM »
I'm wondering if anyone's tried adding scented essential oil to their inks, like walnut inks? I wonder if it would affect the viscosity and intensity of the color. I know de Atramantis has scented fountain pen inks. Those are fun to write with but I think the scent doesn't stay on the paper.

I'm trying to address some envelopes using acrylic inks, specifically Dr Martin's iridescent inks. I'm having problems getting a fine line on these so the writing just looks kinda fat throughout. Are there any nibs you would use to get a better swell and fine line while using acrylics? I used Hiro 41 and Nikko G and wasn't happy with both. Thanks.

Tools & Supplies / Mixing up some walnut ink from crystals?
« on: July 11, 2014, 09:12:17 AM »
The label on the walnut ink crystals from PIA says to mix 1 tablespoon of crystals with 1 oz of water. I'd read somewhere that the formula given by PIA isn't accurate. What's the correct formula? Thanks.

Tools & Supplies / Do you clean out your inkwell?
« on: June 19, 2014, 04:13:32 AM »
I decant my sumi ink into a glass jar to use each session, and just keep adding to it when it runs low. Over the weeks, the jar's gone completely black from the ink and the area around the lip's got dried crusted ink. My question is, do you wash out your inkwells every once in a while? And if you do, do you just use dishwashing liquid or some other solution?

Thanks.

What's your opinion of W&N's Calligraphy Ink and W&N's Indian Ink? How do these compare to say, Calli's calligraphy ink and sumi ink? Thanks.

Hello. I've just got my new PIA adjustable hourglass and I find the flange too tight for my nibs. I've tried inserting a Hunt 101 and Hiro 40 and I struggle to get them in.  What can I do to adjust the fit? Given that the flange is able to fit different sizes of nibs, I want to be sure I'm not warping the flange at all if I adjust any part of it. Thanks for any advice you might have.

Tools & Supplies / Holders & Nibs in Tokyo?
« on: May 05, 2014, 10:57:15 PM »
Hi there. I'll be in Tokyo soon and was wondering if anyone knows where I might be able to get an oblique penholder there and some nibs. Apparently Sedaiko only has the Speedball oblique. I'm more interested in a wooden one. Thanks.
