I would really like to go - I travel to attend nerdy doll collector conventions, so this would be just as fun. And it would be so amazing to meet you all in person!

As for the second part of your question-- no one ever thinks they are good!  LOL.  I'm SUPER critical of my own stuff and FORCE myself to leave some photos and content up on my website, though within a week of posting anything I've usually decided it's hopelessly amateurish and needs to come down...    I think you have more cause to worry about your skill if you're unreasonably confident and decide to ditch the study just to come up with your 'own personal style'...  This (usually) doesn't work, as the aesthetics and foundations are clearly missing...

Joy, your work is sublime. Don't laugh, but I would stare at your Tumblr pages to try to figure out how you did such & such lettering/flourishing. I adore your calligraphy! I don't think my work is good enough to be shared outside of my own personal comfort zone but I leave everything up because then I can see my mistakes and where I need to improve. I look at my Copperplate practice sheets from two years ago and know that I have improved (and also a long way to go)!

Thank you for the warm welcome Erica! Being a member of the SfC really gave me more opportunities to take classes and workshops from some of the "rockstar calligraphers" (in the academic sense) of the community. I'm a newbie who tried to squeeze in as many workshops as opportunities came along, LOL. I could use at least ten more years before I can get to the level I would like to be at.

So glad to have a place to learn and share, where everyone is just as passionate about calligraphy as I am.

Hi Erica,

I came running here to register after seeing your Happy Thanksgiving video on IG. Thank you for this wonderful resource!

My first exposure to calligraphy was also in grade school. My sixth grade teacher made(!) her entire class purchase calligraphy pens and taught us Italic. I'm so glad she did because I have been in love with calligraphy ever since.

Hope you don't mind me being curious - where have you done your calligraphy studies? Are you self-taught? The reason I ask is because I can see that even in your informal/whimsical pointed pen work, there is great lettering structure behind it.

If anyone wants to try out gouache, Winsor & Newton Designers Gouache (the brand I've been using and like) is readily available at Michael's Arts & Crafts. They're usually $10 a tube, but if you have their 40% off coupon it's a good price. Utrecht and Blick Arts carry them as well.

I bought myself the "introductory" box for about $20 from Amazon. The retail price is about $36 at art supply stores!

Hi everyone at Flourish!

I finally got myself registered here, after having seen so many familiar names on IG/Tumblr/Flickr mention this great forum. Thank you Erica for this wonderful resource! So thrilled to be in the company of such great calligraphers whose work I have been admiring online.

I'm Linda, I live in LA and am a member of the Society for Calligraphy and IAMPETH. I've been dabbling in calligraphy since the 6th grade, but started formal training a little over 2 years ago with Yukimi Annand. I have taken workshops with Michael Sull, Pat Blair, Jane Shibata, and Barbara Close. So far I've completed classes on the basics of Copperplate, Spencerian, Modern Pointed Pen, Roman Capitals, Foundational, Italic Hand, and currently working on Blackletter/Gothic. I hope to attend IAMPETH next Summer. I love calligraphy so much!

The pointed pen is my most favorite, so even when I'm knee-deep in Gothic, I still pick up my oblique holder and practice when I can. I can't even begin to tell so many of you all how much your work has been inspiring me since I joined Instagram and Tumblr. At times it's frustrating because I wish I could write better - and it makes me want to improve.

Hope to get to know you all better.
