Broad Edge Pen Calligraphy / Re: Upright italic - critique welcomed
« on: March 08, 2017, 04:50:20 PM »
Hi Jean,

Thank you! All points noted - I'll pin them above my desk when I do my warm-up tomorrow :)

The illuminated St John's Bible is so beautiful. If I can use that hand as an exemplar, maybe one day I'll get close to that quality of writing.

Best wishes

Tools & Supplies / Re: Calligraphy using a standing desk?
« on: March 08, 2017, 04:44:21 PM »
I work at a standing desk, but I also have a high office chair, so I can perch / sit / stand alternately  (I need to move often as I have back and hip problems that complain at me if I sit in one position for too long!).

It's a large Ikea kitchen worktop with their adjustable desk legs, set to nearly their tallest setting, then an adjustable drawing board on top of that, so I can have a large flat surface for some crafts, or a writing slope for calligraphy. It's a nice flexible setup, and didn't cost a fortune.

Show & Tell / A bit of uncial
« on: March 08, 2017, 03:19:53 PM »
Hi all!

Uncial is my go-to hand if I want to relax into calligraphy and not stress about it being perfect. I don't know why, but I find it a very restful hand to work in.

After going to an amazing talk on the art & culture of Anglo-Saxons, and a bit of Norse mythology, this felt appropriate:

Broad Edge Pen Calligraphy / Upright italic - critique welcomed
« on: March 08, 2017, 03:14:08 PM »
Hi all,

I've not been on the forum for a while - life's been busy, in a good way, but also in an eating-my-brain way!

I've been keeping up the practice though, and am getting more comfortable with italic. I've got a job that calls for something formal / respectful and comfortably readable - upright italic seems to fit this, and they like the sample I've sent over.

But! I want to really scrub it up, and critique would be appreciated. At the moment I wobble a bit, and although I like some life in my lettering, I want it to deliberately be there, not be where I accidentally wobbled!

You're not late yet. The deadline is June 28.

Yay! Phew!

That's how scrambled my brain's been, dates have ceased to be a reliable concept for me.

Thank you :)

Hello List 2!

I am late in starting this one - I had a flurry of work come in, and have had no brain for creativity. I will be getting on it this weekend!

Apologies to all.

Robin

Spencerian Script / Re: Wide Lined Paper for Spencerian?

I use A4 Rhodia pad with blank ecru pages 90gsm, it is translucent enough to use guide sheet without lightbox.

The only problem with it is page size, pad is A4, which means that detached page is smaller than A4.

Rhodia make an A4+ pad, slightly longer than A4 with the perforations taking it down to A4.

If your Rotring pen still doesn't behave, you can pull the whole nib & feed out of the section. They're pressure fit, and pop back in with no problems.

Please accept my apologies everyone -- my last reply was directed specifically at InkyFingers.

James

No apology needed on my behalf - recommendations of good calligraphy reference texts are always happily received!

You're going proper fancy!

Have you looked at the cadel initials? They're incredible - I'm not brave enough to attempt them yet!

That's beautifully done - I doff my cap to you!

I manage to get crisp lines with gold ink using a regular dip nib, and a ruler flipped upside down (so the bevelled edge is raised above the writing surface). So if you do want to try, it is possible! However, I really do need to get the hang of a ruling pen as they are supposed to be better.

I'm saving it to read in the morning, but I find the use of "font" when referring to hand written work one of those things that makes me very twitchy!

Broad Edge Pen Calligraphy / Re: Italic struggles
« on: May 13, 2016, 04:07:18 PM »
It's taken a long time to feel like I've made enough progress to warrant posting an update, but I finally feel like I'm getting to grips with italic.

Jean, your advice was *very* useful, and I go back to it periodically.

What cemented the improvement was taking a 2 1/2 day course with Gaynor Goffe, focussing on italics. I really need that hands on tutoring to improve. I suspect this is a Dyspraxic thing - I can't always identify appropriate movements without external help. Anywho. Progress! Yay!

So still a way to go - all critique is welcomed.

Anasazi, thanks! Those are really useful threads. It's a new term to me, I hadn't seen the Jewish calligraphic artform before either, so it's opening all sorts of new avenues to explore.
