Show & Tell / Part of a card I just penned

I did a card for a newborn girl, and quite liked how it came out. Her's the "relevant" bit:

Show & Tell / Re: "Customer" order!
« on: February 18, 2014, 05:09:10 PM »
My friends are the best & support me in my craft so my girlfriend "ordered" this quote.  I put it on scrapbook paper to make it an 8x10 so she could frame it.

I used yellow gouache & is only my 2nd time using gouache!  I think it turned out ok & I love, love, love the quote!

That's nice work! If you'll allow me one comment, I'd suggest using guidelines next time, to get even sized-letters.

Looking forward to seeing more projects of yours!

I totally welcome comments Martin!  I agree...I look at it & cringe at the different size letters.

Question though...when using dark paper, do you draw the guidelines with pencil?

Yes... the same 0.5 HB mechanical pencil I use on light paper. Just use a light touch, and a putty eraser to remove it.

Show & Tell / Re: Song Lyrics
« on: February 18, 2014, 02:57:50 AM »
Martin, I like the idea of practising with song lyrics...one good thing for me is I might actually learn some!  My hearing is not that great and I often find myself bellowing out the words only to be embarrassed later when my girls question "whattttttt.??? THATS not how it goes!" But I've been singing it like that for years! ha! I tell them their mother is just too creative! ::) Lol!

Hehe... Sometimes singers mumble too much ;)

Broad Edge Pen Calligraphy / Italic handwriting practice
« on: February 17, 2014, 03:59:54 PM »
Inspired by reddit's /r/calligraphy word of the day, I did a bit of handwriting practice. I went for flow (and to some degree speed), rather than accuracy, but kept some "old style" features that I don't usually use in my daily writing.

In any case, it was very fun to write...

Iron-gall ink on cartridge paper. French square cut nib, probably 0.5 or 0.75mm.

I'd say that that's good for treating the symptoms, but you're not addressing the problem. Fixing your grip is not just good for ergonomic reasons, but it'll improve your calligraphy as well. Try to adopt a tripod hold, and keep your fingers as relaxed as possible... it's worth the effort learning it!

wow!  I'm impressed.  This is mostly so good Martin will be a wonderfully skilled penman before long!!

Thanks!

Wonderful!

Perhaps with 10 years of long, daily practice... :)

Perhaps.. but I suspect it'll take more than that. At least, at the rate at which someone who's not a full-time penman can dedicate to the craft...

The other day Joe Vitolo posted this wonderful exemplar of Lupfer's work on the FB calligraphy group, and it's so wonderful, I felt like sharing it here.
It's a very nice blend of ornamental-style caps with a flourished roundhand lettering... One can only wish to achieve anything close to this!

Spencerian Script / Re: Some full arm practice for Ornamental capitals
« on: February 10, 2014, 09:59:44 AM »
Thanks, everyone! These still need a lot of work (consistent capital stems, staying on the slant, reducing size). but it's a very fun exercise, and I encourage you to try :)

Spencerian Script / Some full arm practice for Ornamental capitals
« on: February 09, 2014, 05:35:59 PM »
After doing Spencerian for about a year now, I still pretty much suck at doing ornamental caps, so last week I decided to start practicing more. Here's some "full arm" practice. Nothing too good, but very fun to do!

Thank you Martin!! Spencerian is new for me and I'm having to get used to writing with the two different slants. This is incredibly helpful. I really appreciate your sharing it!!

Cheers.

I'm glad you find them useful! Looking forward to seeing how your Spencerian is coming along!

Cheers,
 Martín
