How far in to push the nib?
« on: June 26, 2014, 12:30:44 PM »
Hello! I already have a question. Really I just want to make sure I did this correctly! I found a video on how far to insert a nib into an Oblique holder. But for my straight holder I haven't found anything. Is there a certain depth I push it into?

Thank you!

It just has to be set in and seated tightly. Not too far out but not far enough in that you get too close to the eyelet/reservoir hole.

Straight holder doesn't really require special positioning, as long as it's not compromising the reservoir or be too shallow till it falls out, or too deep until you have difficulty getting it out afterwards..

Hi! I'm new to calligraphy  :) I started my obsession when I attended a short calligraphy workshop in the Philippines.
I'm having hard time controlling the ink spilling out of the nibs. Either it ends up blotted or the ink spills out in just 1-2 strokes.

Need some advice here, I think I'm doing something wrong here.

have you prepped your nib yet?  sometimes an unprepped nib is the culprit.  you can take a look at these threads:

also, you can try dipping your nib in some gum arabic, or adding a drop or two of gum arabic on your ink.  it will help the ink stay in place.

I don't know what nib you are using but some are notorious for that. Even after preparing the nib if you touch it you could get oils from hand on it. Try dipping in rubbing alcohol. Maybe a silly question but could you be pressing to hard for it to just dump? Is all your nibs doing that?

I guess, I'm pressing too hard. I need more practice in controlling the pressure.  ;)
Just to share I'm sharing Quill G-Nib which I got from the workshop.

Without wishing to start a separate thread, how do you know when it's time to put a new replacement nib in?
