David and Goliath
« on: August 05, 2015, 06:19:48 PM »
My never ending nib sorting project has revealed quite a range of sizes for nibs.
Here are three, left to right,
Esterbrook 344 Mammouth Falcon, Spencerian #1 (for comparison), and Hunt 104 Finest drawing.

Am also working on a comparison project with writing samples, but this has turned out to be rather a large project. More on that later.

Whoa! :)  That's a whopper of a nib. Would love to see how that writes.

My wife always says that size does not matter.

Cool! Can't wait to see the whole set.

Love that huge nib, but I'm also curious how the smallest one works. Almost as small as a crow quill.

Keep 'em coming!

I would too.
Even if I were to adjust the flange on any of my oblique holder so as to allow it to enter the flange, it is so long that it ends up way beyond the mid-line of the pen (and I mean way beyond).
I have about 100 vintage straight holders, but none I've found yet accommodate the diameter of this nib.
I might try binding it temporarily to the outside of a straight holder if I thought I could do it tightly enough and not damage the nib. Any ideas on this?

I wonder if that big one had a special purpose.

A couple of small cable ties, maybe?

The mammoth nib was made to fit the mammoth holder. I have yet to find one, but I do have the Midget holder, by American Pencil Co., which was an advertising pen at one of the early world's fair. The image below is one I found on the internet some time back for the pen. I'll follow up with an image of my Midget Pen holders.

Image below of the few American Pencil Co. Midget Pen Holders I have. They pop up on eBay from time to time, I think I typically paid around $10-20 for each of them if I recall correctly.

Red Pen Holder at the top is a normal sized straight pen holder for scale.

Wow, that nib is HUGE!

I'd love to see how thick you can make your strokes with that!

Maybe you could tie it to a cooking spoon. Or a lamp post. ;D

Any progress on this, Mike?  I wasn't joking about those cable ties, actually ... quick, easy and reversible.

That is a big one! Do you by any chance know how old it is? I've seen a few tools like that from when large lettering was still done by hand.
