Adjusting the Brass Flange of an Oblique Holder
« on: April 09, 2014, 08:36:14 AM »
After many questions on the subject, I just made a video tutorial of how to adjust the brass flange of an Oblique Nib Holder to fit a nib. Hope it helps!

One thing that drives me nuts about these oblique nib holders is that to maintain the angle of the flange and to have the tip of the nib sit the center axis of the holder, the nib has to be inserted up to the reservoir hole, making it inconvenient to dip.  Some nibs, for example the Falcon nibs that cannot be inserted  into the holder this far, simply cannot be used.  To adjust the holder to a longer nib, I needed to bend one out a bit, lessening the angle of the nib to the holder.  Are there flanges that stick out to the side further?

This is where a custom holder comes in if you want it centered, look at the image below, this is from my site on how to select a holder and design a custom http://www.yokepencompany.com/pages/selecting-a-holder-size .

I can easily bring the flange out away from the holder by increasing the length of the flange itself. Most modern store bought holders are set for a standard nib (Leonardt Principal, 303, 404, Nikko G, etc)

Also the diameter of the flange has a direct result on the nib placement and angle. Dr. Joe Vitolo did an amazing pdf (after some cheesy photos I sent him of the effect) regarding this in an email discussion I had with him and Nick D'Aquanno. I will see if I can get his permission to repost it here.

You can have the nib before or past the center axis of the shaft. There are penman in the past and now who prefer it not centered. By having the nib centered it just allows the nib to remain on axis if you manipulate the holder rotation when you write. Even though the old timers stated a nib must be centered, there is no constant when you create art (and calligraphy definitely an art) in my opinion.

If people don't break rules we wouldn't have the Picaso's, Jimi Hendrix's, Nikola Tesla and Elon Musk's in the world. All were considered to be nutcases and doing it all wrong at one point in their lives.

Thanks Christopher, I like the "make it work" approach.  I really cant see buying a holder for every single nib, but we can customize them somewhat differently for various situations.  The plastic bodied holders are cheap enough for that.

Thank you so much for this! I keep finding flange angles "too steep" for me (maybe because I have very small hands). Luckily I used to be a jewelry designer in a previous life so I've got plenty of roundnose pliers in all shapes & sizes!

Many thanks from me too, Christopher, for this excellent companion piece to Dr Vitolo's video.  I do hope you get permission to reference that article.

Does anyone have experience with the adjustable flanges sold by Paper and Ink Arts?  They have a recommend from Dr. Vitolo...
