Tools & Supplies / Supplies for Workshops
« on: June 27, 2018, 09:07:57 AM »
Hi all,

I'm soon to be hosting some modern calligraphy workshops at a local florist. With the ticket price, a small beginners pack is included, which contains a nib, practise paper, pen holder and ink...

Can anyone recommend where I may find these supplies as wholesale in the UK? Rather than paying for the individuals?
I have previously purchased pen holders on Amazon, but they didn't hold the nib correctly.

Thank you so much, if anyone has any other workshop tips, do tell!  :)

Letter Pixels / Re: Getting Started in Digital Art & Calligraphy

Hi Racheal,

Yes I think there is certainly a call for digital calligraphy. I gain quite a few clients through my Instagram account @lettersbylayla where I use my iPad Pro to create digital calligraphy. I think digital calligraphy is a niche market and there is more scope for digital lettering. But give it a go! And post some of your work on here, I would love to see it.

Layla x

Gouache is an opaque watercolour paint, you add water to it to make a consistency that will flow through your pen this link might be useful.

Beware, if you by cheap gouache you will not get good results! I have tried Windsor & Newton, Royal talens, daler Rowney designer gouache which all seem to work well.

I have also tried student grade & budget gouache which do not, apart from maybe Royal Langnickel which was ok.

Thanks Nikki, I will give it a go, really appreciate your help  :)

I've used coloured envelopes bought from hobbycraft 'paperado' brand, paperchase where you can buy individual envelopes & Rymans with no problems

For white envelopes I buy the best ones I can, branded 'superior' for example...

You could try using gouache on the envelopes you have, it doesn't tend to bleed as much as ink.

Thank you NikkiB! This is so helpful :) When you say 'try using Gouache' is this a type of ink? Forgive me I'm a complete beginner!

Tools & Supplies / Calligraphy envelopes in the UK?

Hello,

I recently sent out my birds, bees, flowers & trees exchanges, but had a nightmare with the envelopes, the three different types of envelopes that I purchased had ink bleeding and soaking into the paper. I resorted to framing my calligraphy paper onto the envelope, but it didn’t look great!

Could anyone recommend some good envelopes that I can buy in the UK, a lot of the posts on here mention USA suppliers, which is a nightmare for overseas shipping prices!

I’m a total newbie so any advice is welcome, thank you!

List 7 I'm off to the post office today, just in the nick of time! Looking forward to signing up to the next exchange!
