I find the shortest words to be the hardest.  :-\

I’ve also noticed, I have a tendency to a glitch in my bottom flat strokes such as on the ‘n’. Will work on correcting that. A great reason this type of practice is so helpful for improvement.

Open Flourish | General Discussion / Hurricane Milton
« on: October 08, 2024, 11:58:41 PM »
I am hoping none of our members are in harms way of Hurricane Milton. My mother, brother, and daughter were all in mandatory evacuation areas and they are safely settling into a hotel in Ft. Lauderdale. Now just to fret for the next two days.

This isn’t my best work but kept my mind occupied.  :)

Open Flourish | General Discussion / Record breaker?
« on: October 01, 2024, 03:28:54 PM »
Did I break @AnasaziWrites record for longest delivery time? Sort of … mailed 2/21/24 and arrived last Monday 9/23/24. Seven months.

But to be fair - it went to India, not to my own home address.  ;D

I found such variety in the lowercase r for Engrosser's Script aka Copperplate, I thought this may be helpful. These are 4 versions of the lowercase r.
  • E.A. Lupfer's version from the Zanerian Manual, p3. This version is made very tight with just a narrow space in between the first and second stroke. The instruction cautions against crowding the space but also indicates the second stroke should be in line with the first (which is VERY tricky to do). The small dot stroke should be to the left of the line and is similar to that of the v and w.
  • Lupfer's version from his "Lessons in Engrosser's Script" from the Zanerian College, Lesson 2. For this version, he indicates the second stroke to curve to the right slightly and the shade should be on the right, resembling a small c. Baird and Howe also used this version but I have seen it said the small shade resembles a small i and should be flat on top.
  • Lupfer's version from Zanerian Manual, p4. The shade of the last stroke resembles a small c and e, however he cautions to not curve it too much.
  • E.L. Brown's version which I like but makes for an awkward connection to the next letter. He just starts the hairline connector midway down the r.

Anyone have a favorite or one they particularly don't like? Or another version? I prefer #3 but sometimes use a #2. I rarely, if ever, use a #1.

Open Flourish | General Discussion / The Ford "r"
« on: September 02, 2024, 05:22:54 PM »
@Zivio  I beat you to it.  :P

We must have been spending the day in the same manner. I have spent all of the day on archive.org looking at old lettering journals and books. I discovered this in C.P. Zaner's "The Arm Movement Method of Rapid Writing."
It looks like this "murmur" is the one featured in the Tamblyn instructor.

Notice Zaner does not distinguish the use of this r to just at the end of a word.

Now for the Roundhand, I know I have seen mention of it somewhere. When I come across it, I will post. I feel like something tickling the back of my brain about it being distinguished as a "French r." But I could be remembering wrong.

Cheers!

Spencerian Script / Cunningham’s Law
« on: August 31, 2024, 01:43:43 AM »
This morning I received an email in which “Cunningham’s Law” was mentioned. Cunningham’s Law states, “the best way to get the right answer on the internet is not to ask a question; it’s to post the wrong answer.” The concept is named after Ward Cunningham, the inventor of the wiki software! Steven McGeady who authored the law, said Wikipedia may be the most well-known demonstration of this law.

What great kismet after our discussion on the Coca Cola logo and it NOT being originated in Spencerian Script as erroneously indicated on a wiki page about Spencerian!

The title below is written in Shaded Eccentric Penmanship by C.P. Zaner which I just learned from Nina Tran along with Spencerian. If you ever get the chance to take Nina’s Underground Spencerian, I HIGHLY recommend it. It has improved my Spencerian so much and given me some fresh ideas for variations.

Also, the French phrase and the Chinese adverb are similar sentiments to Cunningham’s Law.  :)

Spencerian Script / Back to Basics Before the FUN!
« on: August 08, 2024, 11:42:38 AM »
I am taking Nina Tran's Underground Spencerian class. Nina is without a doubt one of the BEST Spencerian teachers out there. I have learned new tips and techniques in just the first class! We reviewed basic Spencerian before the real fun begins with her Underground Spencerian variation. Highly recommend studying with Nina if you have the chance.

Here is a glimpse at my practice and notes from the first class.

Show & Tell / Stunt Romans with Nina Tran
« on: July 22, 2024, 10:20:35 PM »
Took a great workshop this weekend taught by Nina Tran. Stunt Romans which she discovered in a Speedball Textbook. It was such a relaxing class and I had a chance to break out my fountain pen Husband gave me as a birthday gift a couple years ago. I don’t know what took me so long except I had never filled a fountain pen and I was intimidated. It was SO easy! Wish I did it years ago. It writes like a DREAM!

Highly recommend the class if you ever get a chance to take it. She also offers a minuscules class which I missed.

Open Flourish | General Discussion / A new Student (or two)!
« on: July 08, 2024, 10:05:11 AM »
My husband has taught himself how to turn calligraphy pens and it has become a new obsession for him! He finally made himself a pen and asked me to teach him Engrosser's Script so he can properly use it. We had a great first lesson which was ended when our Siberian, Bloo, decided it was dinner time and Adam was done writing.

P.S. Adam was shocked at how quickly 3 hours went by and just wanted to "try one more" before stopping. This is going to work out nicely for me. Wish I thought of it years ago - LOL!  ;D
