Hand Lettering Anyone?
« on: May 10, 2024, 06:37:17 PM »
I recently had a lovely email from someone asking if we talked about Hand Lettering here on Flourish. I was surprised to look at our boards and see it was a topic that has been overlooked all these years! Hand lettering is different from calligraphy and has really become more popular the past decade or so. I hope we have some hand lettering artists who will pop in and share some work and ideas or anything!  :-*

Hand lettering, like calligraphy, it is an art form that moves letters from symbols to artistic endeavors. Many messages should be more than stiff text that only conveys a simple message. Any artistic form of writing like, facial expressions, can expand the message, with grace and style; and or with strength and dignity.

I don't know how it is elsewhere, but here in Budapest you can find clever handlettering work mostly on the tables of restaurants and cafes. Fortunately, it's a living for those who are skilled. Anyway, I talked to one of these guys and he does everything from wedding invitations to business cards.

We have seen a resurgence of hand lettering in all manner of communication here in the states. Greeting cards, logo design, book covers, and advertisements seem to be the most popular. I did a lot of hand lettering in my childhood but back then I thought it was “cheating” to draw the letters. I didn’t know that is actually how it is done. Calligraphy took over around age ten.
