I want to create a hand-drawn, hand-lettered certificate of appreciation in an old-fashioned style. I'd make a master copy that could be reproduced to use as needed, similar to a diploma, where I can fill in a person's name and where there would be a place for signatures of some officials.
My design ideas are along the lines of Daniel Ames or Patrick Costello.
I've searched for examples of certificates of appreciation but have only seen a few. The best source seems to be Costello's work at the University of Scranton archives.
Does anyone have any other suggestions of where I might find something like this?
-
I'm sorry, I don't have any suggestions except to search the IAMPETH rare books, but I love your idea. Good luck!
-
are you looking for a certificate that already has the words [Certificate of Appreciation] that you want to use as your template - so you don't have to start from scratch?
or would you be happy with a layout where you can insert your own wording?
-
I'm going to create the whole thing. I have a layout in mind I might use Sickels lettering for part of it. There will be a drawing which includes a small building and some trees.
I was hoping to find old examples, but am wondering if our idea of Certificates of Appreciation is fairly modern. Perhaps they came about when engrossed certificates became less common.
-
I can't remember what the wording is, but there are a ton of certificates that are honoring a person after many years of service. They are the ones with a whole list of WHEREAS-blahblahblah. There are big words at the top....but I can't picture what they would be.
Those are the ones you need to find...they seem to be the vintage version of appreciation.... I'm guessing Andy T will have some good links.
Remember - the part of the certificate that is the most meaningful to the recipient is their name - so, hopefully your layout will have a logical way to include name - and allow for
Eric Fox
and
Christopher Hermanstorffer
to both look wonderful.
I'm guessing you would want to have a couple different options in the *fonts* you use for the names to allow for different lengths. For example, the caps on Eric Fox would be spectacular...just to fill up the space.
-
I'm guessing Andy T will have some good links.
Not really. Patrick W Costello's is the name which immediately comes to mind for this sort of thing. There's a CD of scans made by his grandson, Tom: I have a very few reproductions but nothing strictly relevant to the matter in hand. I can certainly ask around as to how you can make contact if you'd like, Evjo, but from what I've seen of your work you're more than capable of coming up with something suitable, given the appropriate wording. I hope we'll get to see the result.
-
Ooh - thank you for your help.
I hadn't thought about how long a line I will need for the signatures (in Jean's example Eric Fox or Christopher Hermanstorffer.) Without your suggestion I might have allowed too little space for this.
Thanks for the reminder about the Costello cd. Honestly, I can't remember but I might even have that! (Oh dear . . . brain like a sieve.)
Thanks, also, for your encouraging words. I never have faith in my ability, which is really weird and neurotic of me.
This project is a surprise for a group; no one knows I'm planning to do it. There's no deadline. When I have something to share, I'll post it on FF.
Again, thank you!
-

Zanerian Manual has many certificates.
Here are a few, there are more:
-
Evjo: IMHO it is not neurotic or weird to question your skills. Part of the creative process is making decisions and putting out a tangible product for the world to see. Those artists who have such a high opinion of their work that they do not question anything they are producing are arrogant and sometimes not as great as they think they are. Don't mistakenly label your discerning eye as neurotic. To recognize that your skills may not have achieved perfection is just being honest.
The very best calligraphers have their own clients and probably a few self-doubts from time to time. But, I guarantee you, they would be very encouraging to anyone who is taking time and care to produce a lovely certificate for deserving people. Give yourself credit for making progress and experience the joy in these kinds of projects. If you are a better scribe in 10 years, you can always create a new and better version.
-
Just for fun, here's something in the same vein from the other side of the pond. English; 1891 - with apologies for the slapdash photography.
-
Thanks from me too. Curious, I was watching this thread to see any examples.
-
These are templates that are not calligraphic but might be helpful in terms of layout. Certificate of Appreciation templates (http://templatelab.com/certificate-of-appreciation-templates/)
-
Oh, wow - thank you all for responding. & for posting examples. I really appreciate your taking the time to respond.
What I'm planning is something in-between the templates that Erica found (thank you, thank you!) and the engrossed examples posted by AnasaziWrites & AndyT (thank you, thank you!)
The link below is to the certificate example by Costello that comes closest to my idea. It's at the University of Scranton Zaner-Bloser Penmanship Collection.
http://digitalservices.scranton.edu/cdm/singleitem/collection/zanerbloser/id/185/rec/1
Compared to this example, I plan fewer words, less broad pen work (which I haven't practiced since about 1974) and some pointed pen. With some drawn letters and images.
It's so lovely to feel like I have Flourish Forum members encouraging and supporting my aspirations. It's motivating. & comforting. Thank you all so much.
I will post my work but now that I'm not sick and taxes are completed and checkbooks balanced and I'm caught up with chores, I need to finish - I mean start - the FF exchange that is due within 2 weeks. Yikes!
Happy writing!
-
I love the wording "Tribute of Appreciation" on one of the Zanerian examples. It makes me feel like trumpets (those medieval ones with the banners hanging from them) must have played a fanfare as it was presented. :) Maybe there was a red carpet involved as well.
-
I love certificates! (And copybooks, and fonts and...well the list is endless). I also tend to bookmark a lot of resources in a kind of haphazard way. I've tried to organize the list of links below but they may still be a bit out of joint. Aprreciation/merit etc certificates are about halfway down.

Wow! Doesy deserves trumpets! Red carpet! A certificate of appreciation! You are the queen of finding exquisite examples for us to study. It is so generous of you to post all this.
I think you were responsible for posting the link to all those old Dutch images I love so much. Yum.
Thank you so much, Doesy. I'm sure I will find inspiration from these.
-
You are more than welcome! It's wonderful to have a place like the flourish forum where someone who has a fascination for certificate lettering and strange penmanship hands (me) can find good company with the similarly afflicted (or at least people who are indulgent about my endless penmanship links :) ).
-
Wow... This should be made available to everyone like some of Prasads great bookmarks. I hope Erica sees this work you've done Dosey and I'm not sure of the term but keys your thread so all members can have quick access.
Nice work. Must have took you a few. Evenings
-
Doesy - thank you for providing such a wealth of information.
Hmm, it is the weekend. Think I'll have to turn off the phone, make a snack tray, put on some 70's tunes and go exploring :P
Thanks again for sharing your footwork.
