When deciding which style of script to write e,g. Copperplate (English Roundhand) or Spencerian it's important to consider this aspect which is often overlooked. At the same x height, Spencerian takes up more than twice the space horizontally.
In conclusion, if you want to save paper, don't write in Spencerian.

The reputation of the 16th century calligrapher Bennardino Cataneo is based on a single manuscript book of twenty pages. The superb quality of his minuscule (x height 2mm) writing sufficed to establish his reputation in the world of calligraphic masters.
I have written this in his cancellaresca corsiva style of formal italic, but I've made no attempt to simulate his immaculate, minuscule writing!
