Copperplate - Dr Martins Iridescent Gold/Silver doesnt flow
« on: January 04, 2015, 07:15:03 AM »
I love the Dr Martins metallic inks apart from the stirring/shaking part. I normally use them when I'm writing with a chisel edge nib, but I found it won't flow properly when Im doing copperplate (tried both Nikko G and Leonardt Principal EF), especially for the up strokes. I know we can dilute Dr Martins Bleedproof white with water, but what about metallic ink? I do love the FINETEC palette, but they aren't waterproof.
 ;)

Thanks.

I haven't tried diluting my Dr Martin's inks yet. But I find that changing the nib helps.

i find that it depends on the color.  the silver i did not like, waaaay too runny for my liking.
the copperplate gold i LOVE. if you add just a drop or 2, no more, of rubbing alcohol to a new bottle, it thins it just a bit and helps the flow.  and nib choice is also important, as Sue said.  i have never been able to get a hairline from a G nib and copperplate gold, if you have one, try a Hunt 101, Spencerian number 1, Brause 76, Principal EF, Hunt 22...

I agree that nib choice is essential. G nibs never play nice with copperplate gold for me. I like hiro 41 and hiro 700 with it. Also, my latest bottle of copperplate gold is rubbish...I don't know what's wrong with it, but I tried diluting with alcohol and have not had good success.

i use distilled water when my copperplate gold gets too thick.
and hairlines are better with a hunt 101 or similar nib  for me anyway,  but the gold has to be
the right consistency,  i think that is more important than the nib.  too thick and you won't get hairlines.
for silver i just did a job with w&n gouache,   hairlines looked like silver thread.  i mix all my gouache with distilled water, lest you
end up with muck on the top of the pot after storing.

Try your local pharmacy or drugstore for rubbing alcohol.

You might know it as surgical spirit ... leastwise that's what it's called in the UK.
