Fourishing: practice sheets?
« on: March 20, 2014, 02:53:28 PM »
does anyone have any words or practice sheets? or even practice strokes (if not full words)

while we don't want to copy and use an exact letter form from someone else, i find that at least imitating someone else's flourishes for practice helps me better understand how creating flourishes and swashes should feel.

thanks for your contributions, ken!

dailyletterings :

These are two basic flourish shapes (from my book).
They can be used either freestanding or as extensions from descenders.
The upper one is slightly less complicated than the than the lower, but they are both simple enough to commit to memory.
They both comply to the basic rules - cross lines at a high angle i.e. as close to right angles as possible. Never cross a thick line with another thick line - it never looks good. Aim for a pleasing balance in the white shapes.

Check out the last two PDFs in this gallery. It's a font with many, many Open Type features, among them a huge amount of flourishes.

Natascha  - so resourceful! I like it! I like the exemplars for the ideas but not so crazy about its execution. Still - a nice resource!

Brad - that is a wonderful book on flourishing (I think the only one!). I have a copy but it is out of print. I'm curious whether that poster has permission though because the book is still well under copyright and this seems to be a very flagrant violation.

Yes, I was wondering too about the copyright issue. I would buy the book this minute, but not for 300 dollars that was about the price the last time I checked for a used book. Such a pity it's not in print anymore!! It seems to be the only book that deals in depth and detail only about flourishing. Or is there another one anyone can recommend?

It's the only one I know of. At least that deals with it like this. It is more broad pen based but still touches on pointed pen. And the principles are similar.
