Show & Tell / Cambria Beach Wedding Styled Shoot
« on: July 20, 2016, 03:57:10 PM »
Months ago, I was approached by a local wedding and event planner (Fairy Godmother in Bakersfield, California) and was asked if I would like to collaborate in a beach-themed wedding styled shoot. I was so excited, but so nervous as well as this would be my first styled shoot!

The styled shoot has finally been published on MyWedding.com and I am so pleased with it!!

Take a look if you'd like for all of the photos... Here's a photo of my calligraphy pieces that were a part of the styled shoot.

I did a few variations of some of the pieces - some more copperplate-like than others and they chose the more casual ones. They told me they fell in love with those pieces and the look as a whole, as it related to being out at the beach and such.

I toured the Hearst Castle this past weekend, and took way too many photos! So many beautiful things to see! Something that caught my eye were some lamp shades throughout this man's office and bedroom, all with various scripts on them! Also inscribed on a stone mantle was a phrase in Latin. Here's more info on Hearst Castle, in case you're interested. My photos are "too large" to post, hence the links. ;) :)

Have you seen this article: Pieces Of Handwriting That Are So Satisfying

3. I have seen more "beautiful" 'minimum' written by some of you here!
7. "impressive cursive writing" the writer of this article should see some of the FF members' work!  ;)
9. I concur!
12. Whoever wrote this needs to give a tutorial on spacing and alignment!

Ames Lettering Guide -

I have tried it a few times and have not loved it. Maybe I need more practice with it? Not sure. I have difficulty is keeping it straight, even though I have used a ruler as a straight edge on the bottom. I've watched YouTube video tutorials and just can't seem to use it properly.

Does anyone else have any tips for it?

Tools & Supplies / Recommendations for a chalkboard wall project
« on: April 12, 2016, 02:32:25 PM »
I was recently at my eye exam appointment and happened to walk by a chalkboard wall, which resulted in a conversation about the project and the doctor asking me for a quote, for me to go in and finish designing the wall. Apparently the person who started the project bailed out - after having already started it!

I've done chalkboard signs before and enjoy it, but they have all been temporary boards, with chalk and/or chalk markers, erasable a few days after the event they were created for. This is a little different, as it's an actual wall in the doctor's office. The idea is to have the patients take a "selfie" with their new glasses when they go in to pick them up. The concern is - will the design/lettering/etc rub off or smudge when people are there taking their photo? I'm thinking actual chalk is not an option, other than for the initial sketch. Do you think chalk marker will stand up to the task? Or is there something else you would suggest? Any ideas, experiences, etc are welcome. Thanks!!

*disclaimer - that is not my work shown on the photo; this is what the initial person did before abandoning the job.

Tools & Supplies / Pen Plotter
« on: March 21, 2016, 02:43:52 PM »
I work at a university and we have what is called a FabLab (fabrication lab) in which we have 3D printers, laser cutters, and so forth. It's always interesting to see what new machines come out and their capabilities.

The FabLab director knows of my foray into calligraphy and my love for handwriting, and recently came across this pen plotter...

Interesting. Or daunting.  :o

My husband and I are going on a 2-week road-trip in a few days:

leaving Bakersfield, California and stopping in Napa for a day
Napa and drive to Washington (exploring Seattle and nearby areas for a week)
Washington to Portland, Oregon (staying nearby for about 5 days)
Back to Napa for a day
Napa to home in Bakersfield

I'll be missing Joi's workshop in Portland - we're scheduled to arrive in that area about 2 days late  :'(
I tried changing the itinerary, but it was no-go.  >:(  :-\

Any recommendations on places or shops I must go to?

Tools & Supplies / Looking for my first fountain pen purchase
« on: July 02, 2015, 01:09:43 PM »
A professor of mine gifted me a vintage Sheaffer Targa pen along with 3 nibs and various ink cartridges... he told me he has had it since the late 80's! :D We were talking about my new-found love for Calligraphy, and he told me he ONLY uses fountain pens! He always has one with him!! Although he gifted me this wonderful pen set, I want to purchase my own... be it a "starter" one. I'm thinking along the lines of Lamy Al-Star, Noodler's Ahab, something like that. I don't want to spend much just yet, as I just want to see if this is something I really want to invest in properly down the line.

Any recommendations are helpful!  ;)

Introductions / Hello from Bakersfield, California!
« on: January 08, 2015, 03:37:01 PM »
Hello Flourish Forum! I'm a forum newbie; I hope I don't get lost!!  :-\
I'm also a Calligraphy newbie!!  :o I've always been told I have really nice hand-writing, and I love to write... I'm always writing - taking notes, re-tracing works I have already written, buying pens and office supplies, ha! So this past Summer I purchased my first straight pen holder, a few nibs and black ink - and fell in love!! Unfortunately, I have not taken an actual class or workshop (not many options here in Bakersfield!) but I have found amazing calligraphers on instagram and have learned so much - thank you!! That's how I learned of this forum. So, here I am.  ;) I hope to learn a lot more and only continue to get better!!  8) :D
