Tools & Supplies / Re: Help me shop!
« on: July 24, 2015, 02:07:44 PM »
@Schin, I think I'll be trying the traditional calligraphy before going into the modern one.  :) I will be buying my ink locally. It could save me on the shipping cost.  I already have Dr. martin's black ink for practice. :)

@Michael, are you the same Michael I've been corresponding with on email?  ;D Is it hard adjusting the flange of a holder using pliers? Does it come with an extra flange or something? I'm afraid I would somehow ruin the flange if I don't know how to do it even if with instructions.

I recently got myself Brause EF66, two speedball straight holders and two smaller holders that looks pretty much like the Hunt penholder on PIA.  Brause EF66 fits on the smaller holder but I don't know if it fits well. Since supplies are quite expensive where I'm from and there aren't that many suppliers in the first place, I thought it will be better for me to buy online. Okay first question. Where do you buy your supplies? PIA or Johnneal? I've searched for reviews for Johnneal, and I found nothing quite extensive. Calligraphers always mention PIA. I like the JNB shop though. For a beginner like me, I found the item description on JNB very helpful. My head is spinning while on PIA.  :(

Here's what on my shopping cart on JNB:
Brause Rose
Brause Steno nib 361
Gillot 170
Gillot 303
Gillot 404
Hiro 40
Hiro 41
Hunt 101
Hunt 99
Leondardt Principal
Nikko G
Zebra G
HUnt Oblique holder x2
Adjusted Oblique Plastic Holder with Metal Flange 66EF
Adjusted Oblique Plastic Holder with Metal Flange PRIN
Adjusted Oblique Plastic Holder with Metal Flange NIKK

Do I really need 3 adjusted oblique holder w/ metal flange? Each costs 12.50 USD.  :-\ Shipping will cost me almost 20 USD so this is just one time shopping.  Haha. I need help. What holder can I cross off my list or do I need them all?

I'm a completely new to calligraphy and interested in modern calligraphy. I'll be ordering from Paper and Ink Arts, and a few from John Neal. Pen holders are a bit expensive. How many straight and pen holders should a beginner should have? ;) Confused! Since some pen holders aren't compatible w/ some nibs.
