Tools & Supplies / SUMI INK + JEWELRY!!
« on: June 05, 2014, 08:15:40 PM »
has this happened to anyone?? i was washing out my glass jars that had some sumi ink/water in them and it seems the ink has stained or taken off the white gold finish to my engagement/wedding rings! could this really be what happened?

the bottom of both of my rings are yellowish now whereas the tops still look like white gold.  i did very little research and found that white gold is not a real metal so you do have to sometimes get it re-coated with rhodium for maintenance, but i know this must've been caused by my sumi ink because both rings have the same amount of yellowing or "wear" even though i don't always wear both at the same time.  if it was a more natural wear, i'd think they'd maybe have different degrees of yellowing...

so sad. :(

Suggestions & Ideas / HOW ABOUT A PINTEREST BOARD WITH CONTRIBUTORS??
« on: April 04, 2014, 09:50:53 PM »
i just had an idea! what about a flourishforum pinterest board that erica can invite other MEMBERS to contribute to?  this way we can all view each others' work on one board and leave comments?!  :D

the idea actually comes from witandwhistle's board called "hand lettering practice" that i've been contributing to since the beginning of my hand lettering "career" and since its inception.

although i know this might make the "sharing" category obsolete, but i'd love to be able to see images of everyone's work in one place like on a pinterest board and people can always leave more detailed posts in the "sharing" category here in the forum as well if they want more feedback?

Hi All,

Does anyone have a good reference/link that would explain paper terminology?  i've done some research myself and found that different paper weights and such are good for different applications, but can anyone explain in basic layman's terms what this means and how it applies in a real-life scenario?

Thanks!

Digital Design / Adobe Creative Suite vs Creative Cloud
« on: March 25, 2014, 01:35:25 PM »
hi all,

how do you feel about Adobe Illustrator CS6 vs Illustrator CC?  the biggest differentiation i'm understanding thus far is:

Creative Suite 6 (CS6):  you own it - but you don't get updates (unless you pay for them) and also, adobe is not planning on having any more updates for CS6, nor are they planning on going any further with CS because they are pushing everyone toward creative cloud (CC)

Creative Cloud (CC): you technically don't own the software; it's a subscription, so once your subscription is up, if you don't renew, you no longer have the program. period. BUT, you do get the latest and greatest updates and improvements immediately.

i personally needed to own the program - i did not want to pay such a large amount to just have a subscription that i'd constantly have to pay in order to keep using the program. at least in owning it, even if it does become outdated, i can still make use of it in its most "basic" form and yes, it will one day maybe become obsolete, but i'm hoping that i would've gotten my money's worth out of it by then.

i'm not too familiar with the adobe products in general though, so does anyone else have any other opinions? is any of my understanding above, incorrect?  would love to know how others feel about it!

thanks!

thanks, linda!!! i'll have to look into it!  i'm still trying to understand exactly what's entailed in a "membership" to a calligraphy guild. can you explain exactly what it means to be a member? are you a member of IAMPETH? i cannot recall.  i thought you were.

Flourishing / Fourishing: practice sheets?
« on: March 20, 2014, 02:53:28 PM »
does anyone have any words or practice sheets? or even practice strokes (if not full words)

while we don't want to copy and use an exact letter form from someone else, i find that at least imitating someone else's flourishes for practice helps me better understand how creating flourishes and swashes should feel.

thanks for your contributions, ken!

Suggestions & Ideas / Erica's Videos
« on: March 20, 2014, 02:13:19 PM »
hopefully this isn't already happening somewhere, but is there a way to also access all of your videos in one place, erica? would love to be able to make sure we don't miss any of your tutorials.

obviously it makes sense that the videos also be in their appropriate categories, but it would be nice to have access to an archive of all the videos you make!

if this already exists, can you point me in the right direction? thanks!!

hi all!

does anyone have any experience with local printers in the los angeles area that they'd recommend for printing wedding invites?

has anyone found it a burden or an issue to use a printer that is not local, or is it just as easy?

thanks!

Introductions / so excited to join this community from Los Angeles!!
« on: November 27, 2013, 05:43:22 PM »
hi all!

quick background: i'm 29 and taught myself calligraphy and got into serious doodling (hand lettering) after my wedding in 2010 when i started to make birthday cards with my random doodles for family members.  shortly after (maybe 2011?), i became more interested in the art of handlettering and started to notice calligraphy after following and being inspired by a TON of blogs.

and here i am! so far i've taken one calligraphy workshop IN PERSON with Maybelle Imasa-Stukuls!!! and one skillshare calligraphy class with Molly Jacques.  lastly, this lady has been a huge help in mentoring my growth in calligraphy - she's got a wealth of hand lettering/calligraphy resources on Besotted Blog.

excited to be here and learn from everyone!
