Introductions / Re: Hello everyone!

I thought that this would be as good of a place as any to write my goals for my penmanship!

My goal is to pen my letter of intent to earn my Doctoral Degree (DMA - Due December 2015) as well as correspondence with the professor I will be studying with. I also would like to pen my November 2015 recital poster (layout with flourishes). This is all on top of the goal of just having good daily handwriting. Let's see where this year takes me :)

I have an Hourglass Oblique Penholder on its way along with some Zebra G Nibs. This will be my first penholder...very excited.

Here is my first attempt :)

I am using a fountain pen, as I haven't received my first oblique pen holder yet, but I am very excited to get it soon!
I have a lot to learn (I am still completing the spencerian copy books and using Michael Sull's book) but it is still fun to try.

As a newbie, I hope it is ok to post a suggestion and I will give it my best try as well!

With the recent civil unrest in the US due to longstanding and perpetuating biases, as a person of color, I have had a hard time figuring out what I can do to help our country make progress.

This quote from Harriet Tubman is beautiful, gives me hope, and I think it would be a great couple sentences to practice on.

"Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world."

Harriet Tubman

Spencerian Script / Re: Why Spencerian?

I found Spencerian Penmanship completely by accident but fell in love with it immediately. I love how it looks on page of unlined paper. It is so formal and personal at the same time. As a musician, I can't help but relate it music, but it just looks so graceful and effortless when done by a master, just like a master musician and a concerto. I also love looking at old letters and journals written in Spencerian because, before you even read it, you can tell it was written with love and care.

Thank you Moya, Schin and Syed :)

I am excited to finally get to know some people that know so much about this craft! My friends and family think I am a bit crazy for my interest, but I just can't get enough.

Introductions / Hello everyone!

Hello everyone!

My name is Alex and I am a father, husband, cellist, music teaching artist, and orchestra librarian. I have always been interested in handwriting and the use of handwriting in design. I really got interested when I learned about Spencerian Penmanship, and have been hooked ever since. I am working my way through Spencerian copy books and have a Sull book for reference. I also have been watching all kinds of videos on youtube (especially from Schin at OpenInkStand) which has been inspiring to say the least.

I keep a pocket notebook with me everywhere I go, and only allow myself to write with (what I know of) Spencerian Penmanship. I am excited to learn more through this forum and would be very interested in becoming pen pals with a few of you to practice and maybe even get some pointers.

Nice to meet you all :)

Alex
