One thing you may find helpful would be to browse the artwork section of the IAMPETH Web site.  There are all sorts of fascinating things there.

Thanks for that Mathew.

Wow. Thanks Andy. There's a lot to think about isn't there? I seem to be opening a whole can of worms for myself here. Illumination, you say? I have in the past spent far too long learning how to construct Celtic knots and that sort of morphed into the love of geometric design and the stuff I do now. I don't think I could draw a celtic knot without a gun to my head now adays.
Interesting about the Tape nibs. I also bought a set of Zebra nibs. They're pointy buggers and good for two things. 1. Drawing fluid things. A lovely line from them from my own mere scribblings. I may be able to utilise them in a design or two and 2. Picking me teeth. The less said about that, the better.
As another question comes to mind. What if any, form of lettering is considered the hardest to do? or is that a badly phrased question?

Regarding nibs...my absolute favorite is Leonardt Principle EF, which is a pricier nib.
)

Prior to signing on here I had purchased a 'starter' set of nibs. I've just looked properly at them and noticed that they are in fact Leonardt nibs. I thought they were strange looking and have since discovered on here that they are 'Tape' nibs. Are these a specialised type or just another type of general nib? What exactly does the 'funny wee bit on the top' do?

As an aside, I have been motorcycling for years and am a member of various forums and I cringe at some of my questions on here, realising to you lot they are akin to somebody coming on a bike forum and asking what do handlebars do?

Thank you very much for these answers.  Most helpful. I'll start where you suggest and look and listen and perhaps make a small amount of purchases.

Hi all. I have recently joined and if you have seen my introduction in er, introductions then you'll know that I know nothing about calligraphy. I have a certain artistic bend and style that I am looking to be able to enhance with the occasional flourish and hopefully elements of calligraphy. So, the question(s) I put to you that know....
Where is the best place to start?
Would trying to get to grips with a style of writing or a type of nib be the best?
Is Flourishing a step beyond calligraphy or a step before?
Does the ink really play an important roll with different styles/disciplines?

I'm not looking to stand on the shoulders of giants, just wanting to take my baby steps in the right direction.
Cheers.

Thankyou Star. I'm wandering around and seeing all the new and exciting stuff that you folks are doing and thinking maybe I should just get my coat and slip away quietly.. So much to learn. :-)

Thank you for the kind words and advice. I really want to explore the world of flourishing. I feel it could enhance my work a great deal to be able to create some of the fantastic work I see on here as elements to the designs I use.

Hi Barry!
I also draw with pen & ink, and found the pointed pen people in my search for information about how to better use the tools.  Being introduced to different techniques & inks & nibs has changed my drawing.  For the better.   What kind of artwork do you do?
I hope you find what you are looking for here at the Flourish Forum.

Thanks. Here's a pic of a commision I have recently completed. Rotring pens and loads of time. 5 months went into this one..

Hi all. Thanks for the welcome. I'm sorry if i seem rude in not replying promptly but at the moment I am battling a recalcitrant broadband that seems to like dropping in and out at will. And I'm in the wettest part of Ireland. Ie the North west.

hello from Ireland. I'm new to this calligraphy lark. I'm an artist living in the west of Ireland and 'specialise' in pen and ink designs and drawings. I'm looking to try and get some sort of an understanding to the processes involved in using calligraphy and flourishing so as to be able to add another element to my work. So please excuse any stupid questions. I'm not trolling, i'm just stupid.
Barry.
