I would like to find a book, or an article, about Herman Kilian's capital letters style.
All I can find are past workshops and/or future classes.
But, are there any books, catalogs, or sources, I can look at? Or buy?
I figured that maybe someone here knew.

Hello all,
I’ve been looking for books or resources about drawn letters and/or built up capitals. I’ve searched for books on the subject. There doesn’t seem to be a lot available unless one’s taking a class and then yiu get handouts. But I’d like to get a book. Does anyone know where? Are there books on this technique?

Guidelines / Need help with creating lettering practice sheets with guidelines and my letters

Hi all,
It has been a while since I have been around here. Life has been busy though I have continued my practice.

I will be teaching a hand-lettering workshop. For the occasion, I would like to create my own guidelines using my own letters either in Illustrator or in InDesign. I know I can download tons of guidelines but I would like to learn to make my own and put my letters on them. How does one go about that?

I am a designer so I am familiar with both programs, scanning and so on. The problem is that things do not really look clean or as sharp as I would like. I keep thinking if I was making a book, how would I go about creating both the guidelines and adding the letters and feel a tad lost.

Can anyone help me or point me in the right direction? I need to have these sheets to provide them to the workshop attendees.

Tools & Supplies / Help creating my own exemplars?

Dear all,

My name is Alma. I am teaching a class at the university I work at titled Explorations in Scripts and Lettering. But I am facing a dilemma. The students would like to have a template or an exemplar, I guess you can call  it, to trace the letters from. They want to get the basic structure of the letters. A lot of them were not taught handwriting or penmanship. Hence, they feel a tad lost. I need help in how to create an exemplar. I am a designer and as dumb as this may sound, I am not sure how to create one. I know there are many for free or in books but I would like to learn to make my own. Do I draw the letters and just scan them and then make them fit on between a baseline and a mean and cap line? Or do I draw each letter separately? Any help would be appreciated!

Hello all!

I am writing an article for Smashing Magazine about Brush Lettering.
In it I talk about very briefly about the calligraphy hands and need to include images.
I was wondering if any of you would like to provide a good image (500 pixels wide and high resolution)
that is good example for each hand for the article? Your name will be under the image
and I would link to your webpage or Instagram account or website, provided you give me the link.

Here are the things I would need an image for:
Neuland
Roman Capitals
Italic
Foundational
Uncial
Carolingian
Gothic
Versals

Smashing Magazine is an international online magazine based in Germany.
I am the editor of the Design section. All of our articles are blind reviewed (even those from editors)
and we provide high quality content on all things about design and web development.
The magazine has traditionally been more about the technical aspects of design and development
but we are trying to include more articles about design in general.
In other words, your works will be seen all over the world.

If you would like to provide me with an image that is a good and basic example of the calligraphy hands,
please send it to me to [email protected].

Please remember that the image needs to be 500 pixels wide at minimum and it should be high resolution.
And remember to include your Instagram link or site link.

I would love to include everybody but I will not be able to.
I would probably have to pick the best examples.
However, if you have an Instagram account, I will include you in the list
of calligraphers and letterers to follow on Instragram.

I would need the images as soon as possible. I hope that is okay with you. :-)

Brush Calligraphy / Brush Lettering Workshop

Hello all!

I have a few questions. I will be doing a brush lettering workshop pretty soon. A friend of mine, who has a type of loft work space, asked me to do one. Which is good because it is pushing me to step out there and teach what I have learned so far. But I am/feel a little overwhelmed.

I need to make a few decisions and was wondering if you guys can help me?

Tools:
I am debating whether or not to provide all of these tools:

• Set of Crayola markers per person: I learned with crayola markers as they helped me learn to control the hand and the turns
  
• One Tombow Fudenosuke Soft Brush Pen
• One Pentel Aquash Waterbrush pen and ink to fill it up with
• Paper and clipboard
• Pencil with erasers
• Eyedroppers to fill pen barrell
• Small ruler
• Paper with drills printed? See below.

Do you guys think this is too much? Too many tools?

Handouts?
I am also debating whether or not I should provide handouts? There is so much online, downloadables, free print outs, and styles.
My biggest concern is that I would like to provide a foundation for the participants to develop their own styles or flare. I think that as they get more comfortable with it, they will naturally will want to letter each letter properly. So, I was thinking of doing something like basic strokes or drills to learn the angles and position instead of printables with each letter for them to repeat?

The workshop will be a total of 4 hours divided in two days. One evening and the following morning.

Lastly: Overhead projector?
My friend thought it would be a good idea to get one. I have been looking online and have no idea where to start? What do you guys recommend?


The workshop will be right after July 4th. So, I am kind of in a hurry because Amazon has the cheaper price on the waterbrush but fi I am going to order it, I have to do it now. They ship very late. I am just a little nervous and would like some guidance?

Introductions / hello, hello!

Hi all,

I am new around here and wow! There is so much to read, learn, and catch up with! Very happy to be here! I have done calligraphy on and off for a few years. But have not been super consistent with practicing. Since May I have started being consistent, practicing every day. Mainly I do a word a day with either brush and ink, broad tip markers like Crayola, watercolor and a brush, or the Tombow brush markers. I would like to learn more with the pointed nib but I have many problems. It gets stuck on me or on the paper. Therefore, I have stayed away from practicing with it. I am hoping to learn tips, tricks, but more importantly proper form. I live in Mobile, AL and there are no classes around here or close by.
