Open Flourish | General Discussion / Calligraphy in Movies (and TV)
« on: January 21, 2015, 11:10:48 AM »
Wanted to share a fun list that Steve Hustings (who is in my guild) put together - since I'm in the LA area, there are quite a few calligraphers in my guild who have had their work appear in the movies! DeAnn Singh for example has done so much beautiful work, and Carrie Imai most recently taught Ashton Kutcher calligraphy for his role as Steve Jobs in the biopic.

Coffee & Nib-bles / US Postal Service proposes price increases
« on: January 16, 2015, 03:54:50 PM »
The U.S. Postal Service is proposing slight increases for mailing letters and postcards—but leaving first-class "Forever" stamps at their present 49 cents.

Under a filing with the Postal Regulatory Commission, letters to international destinations would rise from $1.15 to $1.20. Postcards would rise from 34 cents to 35 cents.

The increases being proposed would become effective on April 26.

On first-class mail, every ounce over 1 ounce would cost an additional 22 cents, up from 21 cents. And letters to all international destinations would go from $1.15 to $1.20.

The filing does not affect Postal Service shipping products and services.

The Postal Service says the price increases are the latest in a series of steps "to achieve financial stability."

Show & Tell / "Make Glorious Mistakes"
« on: January 06, 2015, 01:02:46 AM »
Some of you know that I've just completed my 365 days of lettering challenge in 2014. Phew! It was really fun most of the time... some days I really just did not want to do it (and it was obvious in the quality of the lettering), but I'm really glad I finished it and did it every day for an entire year. I know quite a few people are starting their 365 days of lettering in 2015 - I'm cheering you on!

This is the last piece I did, posted on December 31, 2014. I love this quote by Neil Gaiman! Of course there are plenty of mistakes in the piece, but I know that's how I will learn to get better. :) Thanks for looking.

Tools & Supplies / Noodler's Ahab Hack
« on: December 07, 2014, 03:01:43 AM »
I bought my Noodler’s Ahab a while back because I wanted to try a “flex” nib fountain pen, but for someone who uses flexible nibs with an oblique holder regularly, it’s not much flex at all. I was a little disappointed and my Ahab sat neglected.

A few months(?) ago, I saw on Neil Tasker's Instagram try a mod with a Brause Rose nib and it looked like it worked. I just didn’t get a chance to try until now.

The Rose nib (you guys probably already know) is notorious for ink flow issues, so although I got it to fit, it was still pretty fussy. Joe on IG then said to take the ebonite feeder out and hold it over a candle for 10-20 seconds to let it get soften a little, then immediately put the nib over to make it fit. I tried this with a G nib (because I like it much better than the Rose) and it worked.

Most dip nibs are very prone to rusting, so I wouldn’t leave it in the holder for more than a few days. But now I wonder how the Titanium Zebra B will hold up!!! Also the ebonite was stinky and smokey and I almost set off my smoke alarm. :o But it turned out pretty neat.

I'm always going to be an oblique pen user, but do give it a try for fun if you have an Ahab, but be careful of the smoke/flame/mess factor.

Just wanted to say congrats to our very own Schin for being featured in the UPPERCASE magazine letter of the week! Woohoo!

The next issue (#23) is going to be amazing since the theme will be on calligraphy. Seb Lester (one of my calligraphy heroes) will be the cover artist. If you like art/design/craft/DIY, UPPERCASE magazine a must-have in your library.

Broad Edge Pen Calligraphy / Broad Pen Mail Exchange?
« on: August 14, 2014, 03:43:56 PM »
Hi Folks,

Loosely quoting a friend - "it's a bit like tumbleweeds here in the Broad Pen forum." I've recently been inspired to get re-acquainted and to improve my broad pen skills, so would anyone like to join me in a broad pen-style mail exchange? We can't let pointed pen have all the fun  ;)

Theme: A favorite quotation, suggested by Salman/SMK
Last day to send me your name & address: Sept. 14th. (one month is enough time to do the letters, yes?)
Time frame: October 15th for last day to send

The list is now closed - we have a total of 22 people, so we will be getting 11 each.

I will update this list as folks express interest.

"Olive & Reid is now accepting submissions to showcase the beautiful work of UK-based artists. What we’ve seen is a plethora of wonderful lettering artists doing their thing around the UK, but no dedicated space to highlight their talent."

From today's IAMPETH newsletter. Please help spread the word!

-----------

Dear Fellow Calligrapher,

Our calligraphy colleague, Master Penman, and entrepreneur, Rosemary Buczek, is on a mission to have her company, Gilded Age Greetings, nominated for the Martha Stewart American Made award [http://www.marthastewart.com/1004449/about-american-made]. After learning more about Rosemary’s goal, I asked if I could help spread the word and I’m writing to you, to let you know how you can easily help support a fellow calligrapher promote the beautiful calligraphic arts.

Rosemary’s vision for the Gilded Age Greetings is to grow the company and in the long term, engage it as a place to develop the skills of young calligraphic artists.

In her words: “if we were selected and it gave Gilded Age Greetings the notice……and sales were improved (they are very expensive original cards)…..we could bring on more young penmen/artists and employ more and keep this beautiful art “out there” and marketable. So, I see down the road, if this little business started by my friend, Melissa and myself……..if it took off it could be a blessing to more of our penmen/artists.”

The American Made nomination form requires that the entrepreneurs have an “Online Presence”. While Gilded Age Greetings has an established online presence on Vimeo, the competition only allows Youtube videos for consideration. For Rosemary’s nomination, this means increasing the number of ‘likes” for the Gilded Age Greetings video on Youtube in order to be recognized as having an “Online Presence”.

Here’s where you can help. All you have to do is “like” the Youtube Gilded Age Greetings video:

Anyone can “like” the video so please feel free to forward this mail to everyone you know who appreciates craftsmen and beautiful calligraphy. Please use the power of the internet to get this message out through Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and email.

Hi forum! A friend of mine who lives in the UK is interested in taking calligraphy classes - is there a list of regional guilds anywhere I can refer her to? She has bought a few books but is more interested in attending classes/workshops. Thank you in advance!

I was looking up this book for someone and saw the price. OH MY. How do we know when a book is out of print?

http://www.amazon.com/Foundations-Calligraphy-Sheila-Waters/dp/0966530519

I have the book myself (purchased about 2 yrs ago) and believe it's one of the best with instructions on the most popular broad edge script styles.

Out of stock at both John Neal and Paper & Ink as well...
